It's not just "there are homophobes with this mindset." It's the overwhelming mindset in that community. So is the "silent majority" invocation. And I've heard the "gay brother" or "gay sister" enough times to make me choke. It's a standard part of their memeset.

Literally nothing in this separates it from tens of thousands of other statements like it that I've had to put up with my entire life. I think it's real.

Reproducing old conservative arguments, especially to such a ridiculously stereotypical degree, doesn't make this real.
