Image: Two line graphs with three lines each representing a different fandom. Vertical axis is Interest, horizontal axis is Time. The "My actual fandom interest levels" graph fluctuates a lot compared to the "Fandom interest levels I want" graph, and one line on "Fandom interest levels I want" is at zero throughout.

Fandom?

That is a pretty subjective graph though. I mean the levels you want of former fandoms are presumably so low because you have gotten annoyed with them now. They might not be as bad as this graph is making them look.

So...

You should never have become invested in Fandom X at all, but instead you came in at a high and something made the interest plummet.

Looks like you had too-high expectations when it came to Y Fandom, because the spike you want is a lot more gradual and level than the one you had.

Fandom Z, the trajectory looks pretty similar in both examples, but maybe the sudden rise in interest had more to do with your sudden lack of interest in Fandom X. Fandom Z was a substitute for Fandom X in a way, perhaps?

Or just lines. Squiggly lines.

SA

And apparently I can't tell the difference between X and Z.

Yeah, some fandoms do that to you.

Ones that send you to extremes can be exciting, but when something you had really high hopes for disappoints, that fall can be really hard. And the ones that are so uneven can keep you watching, hoping for the highs, but waiting for them is an exercise in frustration.

Same.

Maybe I just suck at reading graphs because this was very confusing for me, lol.

Fandoms can surprise you, though. The ones you didn't have much interest in can become your favorites and the ones you were hyped up for can turn out to be completely disappointing.

Just out of curiosity, do you have examples of ones that you were hyped for but turned out completely disappointing?

The big one (keep in mind I mean fandom and not source material!) is the MCU to be honest. I did get into Winter Soldier for the Steve/Bucky, but any other time I've dipped my toe in that fandom I was disappointed. Even when people write pairings I like they've often the opposite of what I want (Thor/Loki being the perfect example of this), so besides reblogging gifs or art now and then I don't have much to do with the fandom.

I hate it! I want to be more involved, but I swear almost everytime there's a new movie there's an explosion of a pairing I don't like or a character I'm tired of and I just ugh out.

Makes sense to me. And MCU is one of those fandoms with a LOT of bandwagon-jumping and stranglehold fanon and assumptions, and if they don't appeal to you it could be pretty goddamn annoying.
elaminator: (Avengers: Pepper/Tony (smile))

Yea, MCU fandom tends to find something and stick with it, so even with the stuff I like I eventually get bored with it.

I've been in plenty of massive fandoms before so that isn't the problem, but I find it underwhelming.

Oh yes, this so much.

I am really curious about what fandoms X Y and Z are

[personal profile] intrigueing 2015-05-07 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And what the incidents (in the canon or in your experience in the fandom?) that caused these abrupt swings in interest.

I'm kinda glad I tend to be a slow burn fandom guy. I quietly follow along for years. That kind of pitch and crash sounds EXHAUSTING to be honest. I have a friend who goes through fandoms really fast, and don't know how she manages the energy.
