Well, good news: it's supposed to be very sexual.

I mean, the whole show is about murder and terrible people who aren't sorry at all they did it, and remain not sorry. You gotta kind of enjoy it for the fun without trying to to be ethically critical.

Yep, you're supposed to enjoy it for what it is, not get upset about the murders. Nearly every character is a bad person.

every character in the entire movie/play is a bad person, really. Some people seem to think Amos is a good guy but he's kind of a jerk too, he's just weaker and less smart than the other characters.

In my interpretation, the whole musical is a satire of the intersection of crime, news, and entertainment. The ethical criticism is baked right in.

Yeah, that's how I saw Chicago. I figured it meant to be a snarky commentary about how a lot of big court cases turn more into media shitshows, and criminals into celebrities, and how people buy into it.

that movie wouldn't be the hit it was if not for the OJ debacle.

Enh, I'm not sure. It was originally a play in 1926, became a musical in the 70s, and it seems to have done pretty well. It DID get a boost and revival in the 90s, after the Simpson case, but the corruption and media scandal of criminal cases it mocks go back way earlier than that.

Late to the party, but oh absolutely on the satire and ethical criticism. The part where the lawyer has the lady on his knee like a puppet and then gets the press singing along is my absolute favorite.
