You don't need to read the comics to be creeped out by someone dating a family member's ex.

It's just a pet peeve of mine. If you like it, great. But I couldn't date someone my SISTER dated, let alone my aunt.

Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Nitpick, but I don't think it really works like that when such a huge number of years has passed. I mean, I can see how it could still be creepy, just not in the same way of dating a sister's ex.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's creepy to me because those years haven't passed for Steve.

And also the comics make it sound like Sharon and Peggy are basically twins looks-wise. Which is even more creepy.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yeah in the comics it's skeevy as fuck (especially in the '60s comics, where Peggy is still alive but Steve is sorta like "lol no you're old now Imma tap your niece instead kthxbai" Well, not in so many words but that seems to have been the writers' assumption.)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...the problem is that I still deeply loathe the pairing because it skeeves me out.

I have no problem with the characters as individuals but if they get together in the film, my opinion of them will plummet.

Unless Steve doesn't know that Sharon is related to Peggy.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless Steve doesn't know that Sharon is related to Peggy.

That doesn't seem any better to me. Keeping something like that a secret would be terrible on Sharon's part.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yeah but my opinion of Sharon's gonna take a hit regardless.

At least if Steve is ignorant, then I won't think any less of him.

But since Sharon already knows...well...there's no way they can get together that won't make her seem creepy to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"my opinion of them will plummet."

That really rubs me the wrong way. Like, there's nothing morally wrong with it. It's something that you aren't personally comfortable with, but to start disliking other people for being personally comfortable with it? That's silly.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really?

If some guy told me he was dating his sister...well...I certainly wouldn't see him the same way.

Not that he'd be a bad person, but I couldn't relate to him at all.

I'm talking about them as CHARACTERS. Steve would no longer be my favorite if he got with Sharon knowing that she was Peggy's niece because it would create an enormous disconnect for me. And thus, yes, my opinion of him as a character would plummet because he would be someone whose thought process I couldn't follow any more.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
You're only able to have positive views of people you personally relate to?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
They're CHARACTERS. Being able to relate to a character (or, at least, understand their thought process) is a big part of what makes them compelling for me.

Having a major disconnect with Steve is going to make him a much less compelling character for me -- which would inevitably happen if he got with Sharon.

I still don't like, for example, that Natasha was basically throwing Sharon at Steve at the end of the Winter Soldier but never mentioned her relation to Peggy (because I don't believe that Natasha doesn't know).

Characters don't have to always be nice, perfect people, but I'd at least like to be able to understand the way they think.

Now, I don't really think they'll get together in the movies and I don't necessarily want them to.

But, really? Sharon got the tiniest bit of characterization in TWS. Her and Steve could be made for each other for all we know. And you would fault him for falling in love with her just because she's related to Peggy?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's creepy to me. I'm sorry. But he was in love with her AUNT.

Granted, if he doesn't know about the relation that's one thing (and I find it creepier on Sharon's end to be honest) but it just skeeves me out. I'm sorry.

I've said I don't think it makes them bad people. But I find it creepy.

Steve dating an old flame's niece =/= a guy dating his sister in the slightest bit.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I know. It was an example. They're not equivalent but most people find the former skeevy and creepy.

I find the latter one to be so (though, obviously, to a lesser degree).

It may not have been 70-some years, but two years passed in canon between Avengers and Winter Soldier, and if - if, it's not set in stone - they do hook up, it'll probably be at least another year or two in canon between Winter Soldier and Cap 3.

Steve's allowed to get over Peggy. He's certainly allowed to be over Peggy several years after waking up to find that she's married, had a life of her own, and is dying. Frankly, I'd find it a lot less healthy if he didn't get over her.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about him getting over her.

I just find it creepy in a pseudo-incestuous way.

I want Steve to move on. But I'd rather he date Natasha or Wanda or anyone else to be frank.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Like

I think that's way more a pet peeve that you happen to have, rather than something that's always 100% creepy

which is fine! it's fine to be skeeved by it. but i think those are two very different conceptual categories.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I just...can't get into it at all.

It's just something where, for me, it's incest-by-proxy.

It doesn't make Sharon a bad person or anything but I completely can't relate to her at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's cool

I guess my point is that this doesn't make it a Bad Ship

Is Peggy and Steve being this big tragic romance known to the public? I'd assume so because of that exhibit in CA:TWS. If that is the case, it is even creepier.

Because you know there has been at least one movie made about their tragic romance. There are probably books and songs about it.

Girls talk about how, "They wish they had a Steve Rogers." There are angsty teens who talk about how "They totally weren't in love. IT WAS JUST LUST! STOP MAKING IT INTO SOMETHING IT ISN'T!!" There is at least one couple who does a distasteful Zombie!Captain America and Peggy Carter costume for Halloween.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think they did movies about Steve and Peggy. IIRC Agent Carter had a radio show about Cap and his girlfriend, but the girl wasn't supposed to be Peggy, she was a fictional character.

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-05-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I would assume the radio show would eventually evolve into a Pearl Harbor kind of movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Peggy is interviewed for Steve's Smithsonian exhibit. They even do the whole "Steve, I mean...Captain Rogers" thing where someone's first name is used to show familiarity.

And Sharon's her NIECE so even if it wasn't public knowledge, Sharon would DEFINITELY know.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Peggy was interviewed for that in 1953, and by that point she was already married to someone else. I'm not saying Sharon wouldn't have heard stories about Great Aunt Peggy's adventures during the war while growing up, but considering everyone thought that Steve was dead, I don't think it would have been a huge part of her life.
