Controversial in what context? Because I don't think GMOs are inherently evil or dangerous and I don't believe that gluten is poison (unless you truly have an allergy), but those aren't controversial opinions in the scientific community.

They sure are in the hippie naturalist community though.

Nope. It's poison.

But seriously, acting like eating it is going to kill you because you're on a weird grain-free caveman diet is ridiculous. You people are the reason everyone gives me patronising looks when I tell them I can't eat it.

Like, physically I can put that in my mouth and swallow it, yes. I just already know how that story ends, and would like to avoid repeating it.

So...you fall under the "truly has an allergy" category and aren't who he's talking about. My SO has a strawberry allergy, but I don't go around crying "STRAWBERRIES ARE POISON" because they're not, it's just that some people can't have them.

I was kidding? Maybe my sarcasm is faulty today. I'll look into that.

What I mean to say is that people who don't have allergy or intolerance issues shouldn't make a fuss over it, because it makes things harder for me when people assume I'm dieting or lying because I won't eat a piece of the birthday cake they made or I won't eat lunch with them in a sandwich shop.

No, lol. I'm not the reason people give you patronizing looks. I know that Celiac is a real disease, and I've had friends who have switched to gluten free diets for medical reasons. If you say "Sorry I can't have gluten..." I'm not giving you any looks unless the next three words out of your mouth are: "...it's not paleo." or "...I've gone gluten-free."

Sally Goodmom who won't feed her kids wheat based bread because someone on Dr. Oz told her that gluten is the reason we aren't as (intelligent/strong/disease resistant/whatever) as our ancestors is the reason you get patronizing looks.

It's a double-edged sword, to be sure. For instance, I'm not a fan of animal rights aligned vegans (no matter how I personally feel about animal rights), but I'm happy to take advantage of the fact that that kind of publicity and complaining means most unassuming snack products on the shelves are generally no longer made with animal fats and I have more than a salad as an option when I go out to eat. The same goes for gluten-free products, I've been told.
