I'm not saying that it's a thing that happens only in fandom - but to me at least, it's happened far more often with fandom people I cared about and thought we had a meaningful friendship, until they just vanished without a trace or just stopped messaging out of the blue.
With IRL friends it would either happen more organically if we lost touch, or we stay in contact.
Different people have different experiences, though, and I'm glad you made some true friends :)

I think it's much harder to disappear "without a trace" IRL because you're going to be so much more likely to find out why.

Really? I was just thinking the opposite. All it takes IRL is a change of address and not many other friends in common, or for all of them to move at once. Where I live, people move for work out of necessity all the time and it's almost impossible to keep contact if both sides don't really try.

On the internet, it's so much easier. I usually have a couple of emails and several blog addresses for each of my internet friends. If one doesn't work any more, the other usually does.
