Know Your Meme claims this was invented on 4chan as a joke to mock feminists.

My actual opinion depends on whether period blood carries bloodborne illnesses. I did a quick search, but couldn't find a valid source either way.

the memes they created are a joke and they've definitely inflated the number of people who actually do this and falsely made it seem like a large portion of feminists are "free-bleeders" but like with anything else, there are some people out there who genuinely do believe in free-bleeding. it's just not the movement that 4chan tried to pretend it was. the term free bleeding even existed long before 4chan got to it

Period blood is blood. Therefore it can carry bloodborne illnesses.

Yes.

But like any other genital secretions it can also harbour many and various STIs. Menstrual blood is not like urine in terms of sterility.

On the other hand, I have read that it can have a significantly lower viral load than ejaculate if the individual is HIV negative, but that was years ago and I'm not even sure which study it was so trying to dig it up would be a long shot.

It was.

And I would assume period blood would carry bloodborne illnesses because it's blood. And anyway it's gross (you wouldn't get your pee everywhere on purpose), it ruins clothes and makes messes that other people will have to clean up.
