Well, it certainly is annoying if nothing else. I'd say the exception would be if the character was heavily implied to be transgender in the series (that WASN'T stupid reasons like she dresses in boy clothes or has a rough attitude or something).

I honestly cannot think of any character I'd flag as transgender though, who wasn't in canon established as such.

Everytime I see people use those reasons as an explanation why they headcanon x as transgender I immediately dismiss them. It's as annoying as, "Y is female and has short hair, therefore she's totally a lesbian1!!"
