Well, it certainly is annoying if nothing else. I'd say the exception would be if the character was heavily implied to be transgender in the series (that WASN'T stupid reasons like she dresses in boy clothes or has a rough attitude or something).

I honestly cannot think of any character I'd flag as transgender though, who wasn't in canon established as such.

That's too bad that people feel that way. Gifting fanart is fun! And heck why not turn it into a trade! I guess it helps if you know the person you are sending art to irl so that there is less confusion about the whole thing. Or if you do it for Christmas or some other holiday, you could use it as an excuse just to give people things without expecting anything in return.
