Because gifting and trading are two completely different things, done for different reasons with different levels of expectation. If you start conflating the two into one practice, then you end up with either rampant entitlement or, as it seems in OP's case, a deep sense of disillusionment.

Gifts don't come with expectation, period. You don't need an excuse. Gifts are gifts, regardless of when, who or why.
