See, tumblr can make you change their opinion of someone by calling them problematic. So, are you sure Cumberbatch is an asshole OR has tumblr made you think that?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't say that their opinion of Hiddleston would change if Tumblr called him problematic, they said they'd stop feeling so smug about liking him if the internet turned on him. That doesn't mean they'd like him less, just that they'd be sad to no longer feel that sense of satisfaction that comes with fangirling someone/something that the internet doesn't have any dirt on.

Thanks to tumblr, the word "problematic" now means to me "the person who posted this is an asshole who wants to feel superior by killing your joy and spreading unsubstantiated rumors".

Yep. When someone uses "problematic", I know I can stop reading/listening.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I mean, "this guy comes off as a more likeable person than that other guy, so I like him more," is a perfectly logical line of reasoning. I'd even agree, Hiddleston is a charmer. Not sure why that's any reason to feel smug though.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Because unlike those other fools, THEY CAN RECOGNIZE THAT PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF LIKEABILITY!

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He's dating an Olsen, dances badly in public, has bad facial hair, and acted in a movie with Ricky Gervais. I think that's problematic.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but Elizabeth Olsen seems to be the most talented actor of that clan.

Plus, you know, her sisters are mega rich.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

I'd date any of the Olsen sisters. Don't see what the problem is.

What has Cumblybunch done to seem a rich entitled ass? I don't follow his movements so I'm out of the loop on that but last I heard he was considered an okay kind of guy by most people

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
well he's rich and entitled, and wears "This is what a feminist looks like" without knowing a thing about feminism and making mildly sexist comments, and then there was the whole thing recently about him talking about "colored people" - you have to be pretty damn out of touch not to know what "colored" is an out-of-date and un-"PC" term that was applied to people of colour against their will, where "people of color" is a self-definition.

Cumberbatch may mean well, but so do lots of entitled rich guys who don't think they need to educate themselves beyond the walls of their posho backgrounds.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the PC term then, defined by others? (I'm genuinely curious.)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"People of color" is preferred term by many (most? probably depends on country) non-white people, though "BAME" or BME" is often used in UK (black and minority ethnic groups).

tbf, "colored" does not have at all the same history in many other countries as it does in America. in some places it is a perfectly acceptable term that people self-identify as (but, yeah, I'm pretty sure that Britain isn't one of those places). I don't think it's at all unrealistic for some people not to be aware of the negative history of the word

People of Colour is a self-chosen PC term by POC Americans. Do not assume it is an acceptable phrase everywhere outside of America. It's essentially the same as using the word coloured here, so it is not always PC. Context, location etc matter.

Important to acknowledge that.

He is British.

POC is an American kind of semantics shit.

It's okay if he confused two identical sentences one time.

Tom Hiddleston is a particularly likeable and charming person, he seems really genuinely sweet. I think Benedict Cumberbatch seems like a basically nice person too though. I wish Tumblr would understand that people can be basically good people and still have some stupid opinions? And that it's okay to be like "Well, that was a stupid thing to say, but I still love him." Like, no one's perfect, we're all stupid humans, come on.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Why love someone you've never met? Ridiculousness. Admire their work and move on with your life.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
equally why NOT love someone you've never met?

Sure, you're only loving an IDEA of them, but that's what happen in most RL relationship with RL people anyhow.

I have to meet Cumberbatch irl to contribute to the discussion. I mean, Hiddlestone seemed ok, maybe a little pushover.
People said that Cumberbatch is dependable and helpful, he came to work when he didn't have to. Haha, I wonder what's going on with his lexicon. Like does he do it on purpose, picking the longest words imaginable?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-11 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Cumberbatch also thinks I'm a tragedy and am like a child because I'm autistic. He seems annoyed to deal with fans even when being paid too.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-05-11 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Did you see some video of BC interacting with fans?
I trust your word on the comments on autism because I don't follow his interviews and have no idea. :/

(Anonymous) 2015-05-11 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sources please.

Multiple people I know who've met Cumberbatch have said he's a darling, and he's incredibly careful not to offend (unlike Freeman who's a joker). I'm not particularly a fan of his, but this just seems like shit-stirring.

Image: Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston

Text: I used to be a huge Cumberbatch fangirl but eventually I got over him and more into Tom Hiddleston.

(I know, try not to judge me so harshly.)

In real life, Ben comes off as a rich, entitled ass.

(But that's not shy I got over him.)

In real life, Tom is a total sweetheart. I feel a little smug about that.

Which is dumb because he'll eventually say something "problematic" and the internet will turn on him like it turns on everyone. But I still feel good about changing my allegiance, so to speak.
