Can you be disrespectful to a fictional character?

I'd think it would be disrespectful to trans people (or people in general) to refer to anyone, including fictional characters, by pronouns that are the opposite of the ones they themselves use. It just seems to violate the spirit of respect.

According to Christians, yes.

Yeah, pretty sure you know I'm not talking about religion.

You can be disrespectful to their creators, if they are disrespected by that kind of thing.

I would say tentatively yes? At least in the sense that you're behaving in a way other people would see as disrespectful.

I mean if you went on rant after rant about how much you hated a character and wanted them to die, you'd say they hated the character. People don't really go "Well, they're fictional so you don't really hate anything at all!"

Or you can say you hated a book and people generally take it to mean you hate something about the contents within, not the object itself.

So it's not the same as being disrespectful to or about a real person, but as humans we have a tendency to anthropomorphize lots of fictional things to a greater or lesser degree so if you're talking about a fictional character as thought they were a person and then you behave disrespectfully towards them it's sort of like disrespectful to them? Like "JK Rowling wrote Harry horribly" is a different discussion than "Harry Potter is an asshole and I'd like to punch him"
