I feel like I'm the odd one out because I actually enjoyed Death Note just as much after L was gone.

But then, he was never my favorite character. I always felt like Light/Kira was more interesting.

L always came across to me as too much of a plot device. And he was "quirky" but I never found him particularly substantive as a character. Although it was fun to watch him play cat and mouse with Light, I liked Near and Mello as well in regards to how that went.

Light was actually my favorite, too, and that's probably why I kept going. I really didn't like Near or Mello at all because they felt like inferior L clones, but the post-L arc did have some interesting stuff. Still, I think L's dynamic with Light was really what drove the series. I get what you mean about the quirk, which could occasionally be overplayed, but I did think his anime portrayal really added in a good way to what existed in the manga.
