Gotham Central

So I've been planning on reading this since I've heard it's excellent and the premise is perfectly right up my alley. Any fans want to give me a heads up about any major shake-ups, fluctuations in quality, weird spots, etc, so I know what to expect?

Also, is the best idea to get a trade paperback of Volume 1 (In The Line of Duty)?

It's been too long for me to remember details, but I really loved the comic. I'd say begin at the begining. I do remember a part where the art style changed and it was like colored-over photographs and was kind of weird, but I can't recall where along the line this happened.
