See, I was more of a Ted/Robin shipper at one time, and had stopped watching the show years before. I tried to watch some of the final season, but didn't keep up with it.

So when I heard how it ended, I thought, "Now it makes sense!"

And then so many people were butthurt about it.

See, I feel like it did make sense early on in the show. But by about season 4 or 5, the show had shown us explicitly why Ted and Robin didn't work. And then we got to see Barney and Robin growing and coming together and developing feelings. So by the time the end of the show rolled around, Ted/Robin no longer made sense.

Basically, they planned Ted/Robin but then the characters changed and grew and yet they never changed the planned ending that would have made sense before but no longer made sense.

This exactly! It doesn't help that everyone, including the kids*, got derailed one way or another to make the ending happen.

Neither did some fans' insistence on how it made everything ~more realistic~ - because HIMYM was so realistic in the first place 9_9

*finding out the mom was dead puts a really different light on their "are we being punished?"
