"All female penguins are whores" What?

Good ol' Tom Martin. Became a women's studies major, then sued his college for gender discrimination. (He failed. You can look up his legal suit on the Internet.) He also believed that hard chairs in the library were misandrist, because men apparently have less cushy asses.

Even at Mammoth, we thought dude was trolling. Ain't no way, we thought, someone could be THAT out the lunch. So he sent the mod an email from the address on his legal suit site, and mod confirmed that no, this was the real Tom Martin.

See, he defined 'whore' to mean any woman who had ever at any point needed anything from a man ever. So if your father was involved in your upbringing at any point, you were a whore. If your father wasn't in your life but paid child support, you were a whore. Saudi Arabia was a whoriarchy because women needed men to do everything for them. I can't remember the exact context for the 'female penguins are whores' comment, but I presume it was because male penguins help out with incubation duties.

Tom Martin claimed he would respect women and feminists if they stopped being whores--that is, never making a single man ever contribute anything to their welfare ever--husbands, fathers, government figures, NOBODY. When people pointed out that was absurd, he claimed that women were just making excuses.

The dude was completely, utterly humorless, and absolutely earnest. And he LOST Troll of the Year that year.

That's because it's not trolling when you genuinely believe your own shit.

That's a misconception imo

You may genuinely believe that women are whores and express as much but for example going on purpose into feminist spaces and doing so to piss everyone off is trolling

As long as something is done with the express purpose of riling and angering others or fishing for a reaction, it's trolling

DA

If someone genuinely believes their shit to that extent though, then it's likely they don't see their actions as riling/angering, therefore not as trolling. They probably see it as some righteous effort for the cause, and where better to carry out the good fight than in spaces where the People Who Are Wrong congregate?

That shit's way more frightening than trolls; to call it trolling makes it seem far less fucked up than it is.

nayrt

There's a whole spectrum in between "believes their shit with a terrifying fervor" and "doesn't believe their shit at all" though. People who troll with things like "ASEXUALITY ISN'T REAL!!!" often really do hold negative views about asexual people, but they don't think they're actually fighting the good fight by making that post. They usually don't even think the good fight is a thing. They just think it's funny to see asexual people/People Who Are Wrong get riled up.

Yeah. I mean, I highly doubt the multi trolls I get TRULY care about whether multis are real or not, and the political ramifications thereof, but I have NO doubt that they think very little of me.

The trolls I've encountered rarely care about getting attention. They care about causing other people pain. Banning them or ignoring them just gets your inbox flooded with messages until they finally tire--and I've seen/had trolls go on strong for YEARS.

Speaking from experience, this is just incorrect. There are times when one does know that it's going to be riling and angering, and does it for exactly that reason - not to carry the good fight, but because you want to piss off Those Bastards. Sometimes you play it like you're trying to spread the beautiful light of truth, or whatever, but that's just a style; the intent is absolutely to troll. At least a lot of the time; I'm sure there's also some real fucking nutbars out there, but that's always the way.

I have a very hard time believing a grown man in a university would not realize women would object to being unilaterally called whores.

I mean, there's socially awkward, and then there's THAT.

No, he lost because he wasn't the worst. Over there 'troll' meant anyone who constantly harassed people online, regardless of whether they were doing it for the lulz or earnestly. Considering how many earnestly awful people there were, it was impossible to tell when they DIDN'T believe their own bull; the absurd claims and harassing behavior was the same.

But if he was earnest, he wasn't trolling? I mean to be a troll you have to not believe what you're saying.

Thing is, if dude hadn't gone to such lengths to give proof he was who he said he was, and believed what he said he did, we would've THOUGHT he was bullshitting. Even by Mammoth standards, believing chairs are misandrist and penguins are whores is pretty out there.

So if a troll doesn't give that evidence, how am I supposed to know? You know the old saying about there being only two infinite things: the universe, and human stupidity.
