As sad as it is to say, there are just shit therapists out there. They're not malicious per se, but they can be harmful all the same. Sadly I met m share of them. I'm glad you found a resource that works for you.

That being said, please remain critical, as there is also a lot of bullshit online.

Good luck with your daughter.

I think it makes you a good mom that you care. :) *hugs*

Heeeeeey I follow that Groot blog!

(Anonymous) 2015-05-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The RPer behind it is autistic him/herself(not sure of their gender). The url is nonverbaltree.tumblr.com if you want to look. All the info is in the sidebar.

OP: You had the guts to admit you were wrong and now you can better relate to your daughter. Good luck to you!

This idea that Groot is non-verbal drives me mad. He comes from a species that expresses AND UNDERSTANDS everything through what we interpret as the words "I Am Groot". It's good that people are finding representation in him but they're totally misinterpreting Groot in the film and in comics canon.

That's the great thing about fandom though. As long as you're not forcing it on others, there's no 'wrong' way to interpret something and be a fan of it.

I know people who watch horror movies because they find them funny. I don't think they'd appreciate a lecture on how the movies were meant to be frightening and disturbing and if they find them funny they're doing it all wrong and should be ashamed.

Uh, not to get pedantic, but Rocket's exact quote in the movie was, "He don't do talking good like me and you, so his vocabulistics is limited to 'I' and 'am' and 'Groot' exclusively in that order," which means Groot's speech abilities are already shown to be different from the comics. James Gunn makes it clear the movies will be different from the comics also.

If I recall correctly, the comics say Groot's stiff wooden larynx turns everything he says into I AM GROOT and understanding him requires listening for the subtle changes in breath and tone to get the essence of meaning.

It looks like the RPer took the stiff larynx thing, the vocab thing, threw in some neurological reasons and gave us this headcanon. If I read it right, Groot is still talking as far as he's concerned(whole body/behavior communication, not just voice) and the lack of understanding by other species makes him come off as nonverbal. Secondly, the RPer has Groot mention he is fully competent, understands everything said to him and he expresses frustration that people assume he's incompetent because he doesn't speak "English" like everybody else.

Also as an autistic person myself I'm happy to see representation that takes us into the character's head instead of showing him flapping and rocking "for no reason" which is a common trope for characters written from an allistic POV.

I'll conclude this with a paraphrased quote from Einstein: "Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will spend its whole life thinking it is stupid."

Text: This RP blog taught me more about autism than the experts and behavioral therapists I took my nonverbal daughter to for the past eight years.

I feel like a shitty mom for talking to people about her in front of her because I always assumed she didn't understand anything I said. I'm so sorry.

Enh, honestly, I feel like this points out one of the problems with the mental health industry: it's often from the outside looking in, rather than the inside looking out.

God knows, I've seen a LOT of bullshit spewed about DID over the years, and at least THAT isn't usually diagnosed early in childhood like autism.

If you found that tumblr helpful, maybe that means reading other stuff by actual autistic people would be helpful. Most of what I know about autism came from my autistic friends, rather than the psych lit I read. (Which mostly focused on rocking and echolalia... they were OLD books.)
