That being said, please remain critical, as there is also a lot of bullshit online.
Good luck with your daughter.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)I know people who watch horror movies because they find them funny. I don't think they'd appreciate a lecture on how the movies were meant to be frightening and disturbing and if they find them funny they're doing it all wrong and should be ashamed.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 03:42 am (UTC)(link)If I recall correctly, the comics say Groot's stiff wooden larynx turns everything he says into I AM GROOT and understanding him requires listening for the subtle changes in breath and tone to get the essence of meaning.
It looks like the RPer took the stiff larynx thing, the vocab thing, threw in some neurological reasons and gave us this headcanon. If I read it right, Groot is still talking as far as he's concerned(whole body/behavior communication, not just voice) and the lack of understanding by other species makes him come off as nonverbal. Secondly, the RPer has Groot mention he is fully competent, understands everything said to him and he expresses frustration that people assume he's incompetent because he doesn't speak "English" like everybody else.
Also as an autistic person myself I'm happy to see representation that takes us into the character's head instead of showing him flapping and rocking "for no reason" which is a common trope for characters written from an allistic POV.
I'll conclude this with a paraphrased quote from Einstein: "Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will spend its whole life thinking it is stupid."

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 04:40 am (UTC)(link)Text: This RP blog taught me more about autism than the experts and behavioral therapists I took my nonverbal daughter to for the past eight years.
I feel like a shitty mom for talking to people about her in front of her because I always assumed she didn't understand anything I said. I'm so sorry.

God knows, I've seen a LOT of bullshit spewed about DID over the years, and at least THAT isn't usually diagnosed early in childhood like autism.
If you found that tumblr helpful, maybe that means reading other stuff by actual autistic people would be helpful. Most of what I know about autism came from my autistic friends, rather than the psych lit I read. (Which mostly focused on rocking and echolalia... they were OLD books.)
