When I run out of fic for a pairing, and there's an active fandom in another language, I'll run fanfic from the other part of the fandom through Google Translate. Sure, the results don't make much sense, but you get desperate sometimes.

Desperate times...

When I've gotten desperate, I've read a few more than questionable fics. Google translate actually sounds like a better option than going back and reading the terribly written fics I dismissed the first time around.

Same, to the point I know which languages pairs are likely to get a readable result or not with google translate (German to English can be ok-ish, Japanese to English is usually a mess, Danish to English can be surprisingly amusing, etc.)

I used to do this for my rare pairs in small/non-English fandoms.

Do you find that Japanese falls down the most on the action bits? Dialogue is usually comprehensible, smutty bits not.

ayrt

Yeah, I think google translate (JP-EN) is not that awful with dialogue, but it fail epically with narration and it's specially bad with porn, since it's completely incapable of dealing with euphemisms and such.

And there's the issue of names being translated literally sometimes. That can be amusing tho, ngl.

this is the reason i learned english, fanfic in my language was too scarce

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, kind of. Happened over a decade ago, but yeah.

I do that too occasionally, sometimes for rare pairings, sometimes for tiny fandoms. You take what you can!

Not sure why but this has never crossed my mind. (And there have definitely been times where a smaller pairing I liked had fic, but in a different language; I sadfaced and scrolled past it.)

Now I really want to try this.

I've been trying this because there is this one author who writes Melkor/Sauron fics in Japanese. And I've run out of English ones to read. Only the words are too fandom specific and don't translate into anything remotely readable.

I guess it is back to rereading old ones.

I've honestly done this myself. You're not alone.

I am at this stage of desperation. I may have to try this.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I had to do that in my last fandom. It's really frustrating being in a fandom with so little stuff.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
SAME!

I try to supplement and mentally modify the translated text with what little knowledge I have in that second language. It doesn't work too well but desperate times.

That's why I'm so happy about speaking two languages! Russian ff writers are the best :)))

the thirst is too real

My fandom's big enough to supply me with plenty of fics but WHYyyy DO THE JAPANESE SHARE ALL MY SHAMFUL KINKS?

Western fandom is just too vanilla for me.
