The entire time I’ve watched this show, I’ve known it was highly likely to be cancelled
(I’m writing this secret before any announcement so you can laugh at me if ABC has a brain fade & renews)
I’m glad it’s only getting one season.
I just watched the last episode & I’m suddenly interested in fanworks.
It’s become much more interesting to me as a closed canon.

S!B: fans of this show are RABID & convinced of a second season

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much completely agreed. (Minus being interested in the fanworks). I was convinced it was going to be cancelled after the second episode, so I've long since made my peace with it ending. I truly do not get why people are so rabid for a second season. I think it's just fine with the ending it got. Imo (and I KNOW people disagree with me on this) it didn't even end on a cliffhanger, so I'm happy about that.

I haven't seen it yet. I hope cancellation means a speedy DVD release.

I'm rabid for a second season simply because I wanted to see more of the original creators' ideas (is Jo going to be the only one in the know? Will Lucas somehow find out? Just how long IS Henry going to keep Adam like that? Now that Abigail's fate is known, will the seeds of romance blossom?). I knew deep down in my heart that there would be no "Hail Mary" moment, but that didn't stop me hoping.

It's like when I find a new author that I like, and find out they've only written the one book that made me a fan. I want more, dangit!

I've always assumed it was getting cancelled, so I wasn't shocked or angry. I'm just a little sad. I always find it more fun after people are in on the secret than before, and I would have loved to have seen Jo's reaction, and how they worked together after she finds out.

The only thing the finale didn't do that I desperately wanted was show Henry finally telling Jo his secret. But they did imply it was about to happen, so I am satisfied with just the one season.

That said, it’s been years since a live action show captured my interest while it was still ongoing, and I would welcome a second season just to have a current show to follow.

I haven't watched this show, but I relate completely to the closed canon part.

A show I was watching a few years back was supposed to run for one season, and I was glad. I thought that anything they did with it beyond that season would be basically filler and I was much more invested in fanwork knowing that what there was of canon was all there was. People acted as though I was being sacrilegious for suggesting I'd be okay with one season.

(That particular show did end up getting an absolutely terrible second season, and it was funny to see the same people who'd told me I was a terrible traitor for wishing it wouldn't happen agreeing with me that it was a huge mistake.)

tl;dr, sometimes closed canons are much more fun to work with as a fanwork creator.

Was this about Dollhouse, anon?

Haven't seen this, but I feel this way about Firefly. Loved it, am glad there wasn't more (because in that case, the future plans for the show sounded pretty awful).

Yeah, reading about the plans for Inara was just World of Nope.

I'm kind of stunned someone made a Forever secret. It didn't seem popular enough to get one.

As to the secret itself, I'm with you. I suspected it wouldn't get renewed, even though I was enjoying it. So while I wasn't happy when it finally happened, I wasn't as shocked and upset as a lot of fans seem to be.

(Also, it didn't help that I think the finale was sort of terrible, though it at least did a good job of tying up loose ends and leaving it open-ended.)

I don't mind it being a closed canon, either, though that does mean that most people will probably fall away from the fandom by the end of the year. It's just the nature of things. Me, I'll just write for it whenever I get a plot bunny, and wait for the promised DVD.

I wish there had been more of it, but I wasn't expecting it, and I enjoyed what I got for the most part, especially as it mostly resolved everything in the last episode, so I'm not too sad it ended. I'm sure fandom will be dead shortly, though, as there just isn't enough material to sustain it. (I've been in many active fandoms and few had enough material to continue for long after their cancellations. Ones with shorter runs died faster.) Oh well.

Similar experiences

Haha, your experience is similar towards mine and a different show, called Being Human (I've only watched the UK version). The first season of it I can honestly say is a fantastic, short, and narratively-complete show, if I pretend that the other seasons don't exist.

It's good that you've made your peace with your show, anon. If another season comes out and it's bad/great, it's still a win/win situation for you.
