I haven't watched this show, but I relate completely to the closed canon part.

A show I was watching a few years back was supposed to run for one season, and I was glad. I thought that anything they did with it beyond that season would be basically filler and I was much more invested in fanwork knowing that what there was of canon was all there was. People acted as though I was being sacrilegious for suggesting I'd be okay with one season.

(That particular show did end up getting an absolutely terrible second season, and it was funny to see the same people who'd told me I was a terrible traitor for wishing it wouldn't happen agreeing with me that it was a huge mistake.)

tl;dr, sometimes closed canons are much more fun to work with as a fanwork creator.
