I hate that "innocent until proven guilty only applies to court cases!" has become such a popular retort, as if the court of public opinion is a much more noble entity.

SA
I mean, I get having formed an opinion based on available information, but its shitty to dismiss people who haven't with such a trite, shut-down phrase.

I haven't heard it about anything other than rape or rape-adjacent cases, which as we all know is where a lot of people throw 100% of the rules out the window and go with gut reactions.

That's dumb. I frankly don't feel comfortable making opinions on ANY criminal case, even high profile or serious ones, because I have no idea and none of us but the people in the trial have any idea.

Granted, I think there's a difference between assuming innocence, and just being skeptical of assuming guilt.

I've only ever seen it used in response to people who insist that "innocent until proven guilty" means that you can't believe and say that the person did it if they haven't been found guilty in court.

I'd probably be annoyed too if I heard it used in other contexts, but it is useful in that one way.
