Isn't this already how the world is though?
(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)But if you look at the gulf between the rich and the poor, it's basically this.
I mean, according to the Global Rich List, if you make $20,000 a year then you're in the richest 3.65% of the population.
I think that puts everyone here in that category.
Re: Isn't this already how the world is though?
(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)Yes, but Elysium's world is almost deliberately constructed to create the hugest possible gap between the well-off, who can live in eternal sunlight, live in custom palatial homes, and anything they want can be plucked from the Earth below, and the poor on Earth, whose lives are the deepest irony: their jobs are either to pull resources from the planet for Elysium, or to fabricate more of the tools they use to enslave themselves and others on Earth itself.
But in our world, there's more room for in-betweens and the chance to live a smidgen better than that. While the system on Earth is not as consciously constructed like that I do concede there are powerful interests in preserving the status quo.
