2001 A Space Odyssey isn't very long, actually. Also, you could pick up an Arthur C. Clarke short story collection, perfect for train riding. I love A Long Long Sleep (future postapocalypse Sleeping Beauty). The Martian is really good too. If you've read Ender's Game (or, heck, even if you haven't) try Ender's Shadow.

Haha I know but then there's the rest of the books and you can't read just /one/ book in a series ;) but I'll check out the short stories
