YA sci fi books?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I really want to read some new sci fi, but nothing too heavy, long and involved. (Sorry Dune, Mars and Space Odyssey)

Trilogies and series are good and well but mostly after something enjoyable to read on the train. Anyone stumble across some new goodies?

I know this is an annoying way to respond to recs, so I am sorry, but have you read the Leviathan Wakes, James SA Corey stuff? It is pretty long, and it's not YA, but it's not too involved, and it's pretty space-opera-y, action-y stuff.

No I haven't but I won't rule it out. Just a bit tired of wading into epics when I just want a quick story

Eh, to be honest, in that case, it's probably not really your jam. It is long, and there is a lot of business; I think I'm misremembering it because I just kind of decided not to care about it.

Vorkosigan?

2001 A Space Odyssey isn't very long, actually. Also, you could pick up an Arthur C. Clarke short story collection, perfect for train riding. I love A Long Long Sleep (future postapocalypse Sleeping Beauty). The Martian is really good too. If you've read Ender's Game (or, heck, even if you haven't) try Ender's Shadow.

Haha I know but then there's the rest of the books and you can't read just /one/ book in a series ;) but I'll check out the short stories

Always Vorkosigan saga! Fun space opera! Basically every book can be read as a standalone / last book of the series, and yet still has continuity and character development!
