Because it's the pilot and characterizations are almost always exaggerated in pilots...

Plus, doing things that would get you written up in real life is pretty much a staple in "cop" shows. You want reality, go watch the millions of reality cop shows out there...

Marshall's fucking awesome...

But do yourself a favor and stop watching because the ending is so effing bad that it has left a horrible taste in my mouth for the whole series.

Still love Marshall, however.
