[In Plain Sight]

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder the same thing about Bones.

And I didn't like In Plain Sight either.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's the pilot and characterizations are almost always exaggerated in pilots...

Plus, doing things that would get you written up in real life is pretty much a staple in "cop" shows. You want reality, go watch the millions of reality cop shows out there...

Marshall's fucking awesome...

But do yourself a favor and stop watching because the ending is so effing bad that it has left a horrible taste in my mouth for the whole series.

Still love Marshall, however.

Aw, I liked this show

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the pilot, they were still finding their characters.

Mary is a great fool in some personal ways, that's much of the show. Marshall is adorable, though. But then, I even kind of liked him in the pilot.

At least Mary's baseball-player boyfriend in the early seasons is pretty?

Yeah, I never didn't like Marshall, although the pilot is his most un-Marshall like

I have this same secret, but applied towards most every TV show that's not animated. I keep thinking to myself when I watch a protagonist "WTF, this person is an asshole, are we really supposed to like them?"

Is it just me, or are TV characters a lot meaner now? ._.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
They're supposed to be "edgy"

But, yeah, they're just meaner overall...

Which is why I'm not ashamed to watch the Disney Channel as an adult... (but even those shows can get mean)

Amen to no shits given about watching cartoons as an adult. :)

I watched this series on and off and while Mary (and Marshall tbh) did things that would obviously get someone in the real world into real trouble, she's overall pretty awesome. I liked that she was basically the hardboiled detective stereotype turned on its head. Also, I in general like characters that say what everyone else is just thinking.

The ending though... *shudder* I'm glad I pretty much stopped watching a season before that, but I'm sad I took time out of my life to ruin a decent show with that finale.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I *still* can't watch any episodes because of the ending.

Maybe in ten years (which is how long it took me to get over the Voyager finale)...

[personal profile] replicantangel 2015-05-15 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
The Voyager finale was a total shit-show too, but at least it didn't decimate *all* the characters' personalities. I shipped Janeway/Chakotay (and Janeway/Seven), but I didn't honestly believe Janeway was going to end up with either one of them. (I have to admit, I was pleased to hear the Chakotay/Seven relationship is over in the novels - at least some writers recognized what a terrible idea that was!) I know that's most people's biggest "WTF" from the end of the series anyway.

Overall though, yes, that finale was just a hand-waving, "pay no attention to how little sense this is making" mess. They had YEARS to figure out how to get them home - obviously that would be the finale. And that was the best they could do???

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I accepted that they wouldn't put J/C together, but what they did was soooooooooooo much worse. UGH.

But on top of that, there was just such little for anyone other than Janeway to do in that episode (and I LOVE Janeway).

Just ugh.

Man, I will never stop being bitter over Chakotay/Seven. I know J/7 never had a chance of actually happening in canon, and I guess I'm grateful that at least J/C wasn't canon in the show, but everything about C/7 -especially the reason it came about in the first place- was and is terrible.

SPOILER FOR SERIES FINALE

[personal profile] replicantangel 2015-05-15 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
From what I remember, Stan gets promoted and there's a "who's going to get his job?" question, even though it's totally not a question at all. Marshall gets the promotion and gets engaged to that really obnoxiously cheerful police detective girlfriend of his. Mary meets some random single dad at the park and invites him to some get-together in the final scene, somehow implying in the space of 5 seconds that he's the one for her. (Also, Jinx and Brandi move back to Albuquerque to live with Mary, and Brandi's pregnant by some random other guy.)

I didn't watch the episodes that lead up to the finale, so I remember being a bit confused, but I *do* remember being intrigued by the teasers which implied that Marshall was going to admit his feelings for Mary. I kind of half-heartedly shipped them (no one else can put up with Mary, after all), so I watched. Instead, it was all a build-up to this scene where he tells her that he loves her and will always be there for her... as a friend. And somehow that's a resolution to the whole issue of Mary being dependent on Marshall and calling him constantly and that ticking off the obnoxiously cheerful girlfriend/fiancee.

Basically, it didn't deliver, which would have been fine if it was resolved better and in keeping with their characters. Or at the very least that the network didn't tease exactly what much of the audience wanted but was the opposite of what did happen. I still want that hour of my life back.

It is my understanding Mary McCormack personally approved the ending and, as she was the producer...

I didn't see all of either the fourth or the final season but I wasn't thrilled with the way it was going.

I loved the show - sorry. I never watched the last season though, and from what I've read, I'm glad of that.

I liked Mary okay, but I disliked Marshall so much that I didn't even last two seasons. He was sort of like a slightly less obnoxious version of Booth from Bones, or at least that's how I always saw him.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see that at all. Can you elaborate?
cakemage: (English major)

[personal profile] cakemage 2015-05-15 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Basically, I saw them as having similar tendencies towards self-righteous smugness that they rarely got seriously called out for, and even when they were their attitudes often ended up proven "right" all along by the end of the episode, especially when their positions were opposed to those of Brennan and Mary respectively, whose own tendencies towards smug cockiness were more likely to be treated like flaws. Beyond that, no, they don't have much in common, and to be fair, Marshall was never anywhere near as bad about that as Booth was, or at least he wasn't during the first two seasons, which is about when I stopped watching.

I can think of quite a few shows with unlikeable/obnoxious/inept leads.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
But, I will admit that Mary was more in-your-face abrasive than many.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
The irony is, I just got done watching the S1 finale and holy fuckballs, do Mary's mom and sister manage to make it ~all about them~ SFM.

Like, her mom fucking FLIPS OUT when Mary sees her singing at the audition, blows her own chances of getting into the show, and has the unutterable nerve to blame Mary for it and accuse Mary of deliberately sabotaging her. Oh, and her mom basically permanently invited herself into Mary's house to start with and contributes fuck-all for expenses.

Then her sister, who also has no job, lands herself (and through no fault of her own, but this kind of shit has a way of spreading) in serious deep shit over a drug deal and expects Mary to fix everything because she's never had to take any real responsibility herself.

And in the end, Mary never really calls either of them out for it to the extent she should have, although she does impress on Brandi that she needs to own her own shit (and to her credit, Brandi does call the lawyer).

So tl;dr: Mary manages to meet her match in the form of two women who impose on her and expect her to handle all the hard stuff. Talk about wow.

Text: I just finish watching the pilot for this TV series.

I'm frankly a bit agog that this lasted five whole seasons. His prissy face and attitude just make me want to smack his face when I see him. As for her, well, for starters, she foists off practically every boring thing she has to do off onto someone else. And then, on top of that, she pulls shit that would get her written up so fast she'd be in for so many chats with her boss over those disciplinary proceedings she'd likely have long since been bounced from the US Marshalls.

How can these unelikely people manage to drive a show for that long???
