I WILL ALWAYS RANT ABOUT THIS, always always always. Any chance I get. Because it just won't quit bothering me.

A female writer wrote a critique of the Battlestar Galactica miniseries a decade ago, arguing that it was sexist and that every single female character in it was bad. Now I'll give you Six's portrayal. There are problems with it. But...holy shit, everyone else?

Roslin? She was "God's bitch." Also, even though she became president, she was just a "school marm" before, so that didn't count.

Dee? She kissed Billy. This meant she was just there to be a love interest. Nothing else she did mattered.

Boomer? She was a Cylon. So she didn't count.

Starbuck? HOLY FUCKING SHIT. She was just a "boy with boobs" because she smoked cigars and had short hair, and because when we're introduced to her, she's wearing "masculine clothing." Never mind that this clothing is the regulation clothing that EVERYONE ELSE, male and female, is wearing. Real women are not like Starbuck. You hear that? If you're anything like Starbuck, and you relate to her, then you're not a real woman! Isn't that nice? Oh, also, she represented the Madonna half of the Madonna-Whore complex because she wouldn't immediately sleep with Apollo. The fact that he's the brother of her dead fiance should not have mattered, because that's not actually a big deal (I'm fucking serious, this woman actually argued that. In fact, she MOCKED the idea that someone wouldn't sleep with a guy just because it was her dead fiance's brother). Now, keep in mind, she criticized Dee for kissing a man and said that overrode everything else about her character, but Starbuck is sexist because she didn't fuck Apollo. Makes sense, right?

Errrgh. It was AWFUL, and it was super fucking sexist in its own right, especially with the "real woman" crap.

Was this the same writer who thought Firefly promoted rape because interrracial couples are always abusive, or whatever that crap was?

I remember that!

No idea if it's the same person, but that was so bizzare. The argument basically boiled down to "In my family, everytime a black woman was involved with a white man, the man was abusive, therefore all white men who are involved with black women are always abusive, even fictional characters who have never shown signs of being abusive and have no independent existence outside of what people make up for them."

Kind of like a particularly weird version of "My headcanon is the one true correct canon."
