homophobia, racism, sexism

the fanfic versions are 99% made of straw

like, most people aren't secretly card-carrying westboro members informing their children they are going to hell and kicking them out of the house the moment they come out as a lesbian

parents in fic somehow always are, though

It happens in fiction too. Which I think actually does damage to progress. We forget that your supposedly sweet neighbor who watches your dog while you're away and remembers the names of all your family members might reveal deep biases eventually - perhaps when they learn something about you. That's when it gets messy and complicated. You can tell what the guy who has bigoted bumper stickers all over his car thinks, but there's more seemingly friendly old ladies.

SA - Also wanted to add it's not even all older people. I've been shocked at how there's a loot of people my age (I'm in the 25-34 age bracket) who think homosexuality's a sin and hold racist views.

ayrt

Yes thats exactly what I meant

all the *isms are far more insidious than that and there's plenty of "hate the sin love the sinner" that goes on with people who go on believing they're good and who believe they love the gay person. reducing it to RAR GAYS BAD RAR HOMOPHOBIC PARENT SMASH all the time is stupid

and usually a cop-out by the writer

I'd go a layer deeper and point out that the old lady isn't "seemingly friendly", she IS friendly. Also bigoted. Having fucked-up views on one or more issues doesn't automatically ruin the other aspects of your personality; your does does not retroactively have become unwatched when you find out Mrs. Johnson doesn't trust Mexicans.

It's just what you said: bigots being horrible cartoonish monsters is not a real thing.

I definitely agree. Even the better, otherwise intelligent and interesting works are guilty of that. I've seen some really strawman homophobic characters in the Lewis fandom, for example (and their AO3 fanfic tends to be generally high quality).
