Life in Japan, in anime/drama/game/etc fandoms.

I mean it's pretty jarring, but at the same time, I get it. When you write about like in a different country, you often don't even know what to question might be different, and it's hard to look up every single possible detail. I'm not mad about it, really, but it's just something I notice since I lived in Japan for five years.

Well to be fair, Japanese fans of Western canons and Japanese canons that take place out of Japan do that too. Eg. I'm watching Blood Blockade Battlefront, an anime that takes place in New York City, and the main character is bowing all over the place to apologize to people. Wtf?

Yeah, I'm kind of tired of all the fanfiction writers who think Japanese high schools work exactly the same as US ones and people are constantly doing, eating and saying this that are very US-teen rather than Japanese-teen. I don't expect them to know everything, but even paying the tiniest bit of attention to the anime/manga canon would help...

I think one of my favourites was someone who, in a discussion about what kind of music a certain character probably listens to, they seriously said "he totally listens to weeaboo trash".

I think the biggest issue is many people don't even try, because getting a detail wrong is one thing, but many fics set on Japan have the characters paying with dollars or celebrating thanksgiving, etc.

homophobia, racism, sexism

the fanfic versions are 99% made of straw

like, most people aren't secretly card-carrying westboro members informing their children they are going to hell and kicking them out of the house the moment they come out as a lesbian

parents in fic somehow always are, though

Tattooing. And hospital stays, like - people just ripping IVs out and leaping up. If you just had surgery? That's not gonna happen. Plus - catheter. That ain't just gonna slide out - kinda the point.

Autism

It alway seems to be some strange collection of tics. I mean yes that is part of it to varying degrees but the biggest thing of autism is having no idea how everyone feels. Fanfic autists just seem quirky and childlike.

Does the furry fandom count? If so, anything and everything to do with animal mating habits. (This also applies to almost anything that has werewolves in it.)

Historical / other-genre AUs, especially more old school other genres. I think people just don't really have the requisite knowledge of those times and those genres to do it in a way that's not a pastiche of a small number of cultural examples and parodies.

Language of particular historical periods. I've seen one Sherlock Holmes fic where Watson kept saying "okay". Cringed right out of it.

(I'm saying this as someone who's an ESL and used to get these things hilariously wrong all the time... I probably still get some of them wrong, tbh).

Use of foreign languages. But to be fair, published authors often do it just as bad.

The very existence of the Draco In Leather Pants and Woobyfication tropes. That's not the characters at all anymore!

Religion. Not just Christianity and Judaism, but pretty much everything else, like Buddhism, for example. (Most people aren't aware there's different denominations of it as well) Religion in general is often portrayed either as a virulently nasty strawman -not just by non-religious, but even by other denominations within a certain faith-, or well-meaning but incredibly uninformed.

The same can be said for atheism and agnosticism as well. Like the stereotype of the Dawkins-esque angry atheist who relishes any opportunity to mock the faithful. Most atheists I've known have been very respectful towards my religious beliefs and don't mock me or anyone else.

I think a lot of authors (especially younger ones) have absolutely no idea how much alcohol a human being can drink before dying of alcohol poisoning.
I've read some very amusing stories where characters basically drank 5 bottles of Vodka in one go and were at best slightly tipsy.
