That is cause most ficcers exposure to autism are the "self-diagnosed" assholes on the internet. They come in either Gamer Gate scum or Luna Lovegood ditz varieties, and if you dare to suggest they are just assholes and tryhard idiots and their self diagnosis is bullshit then you get dogpiled by the autism fanclub of socially awkward nerds.

That is because autism's "symptoms" aare really so diverse that you can pretty much throw any non-normal behavior in under the label and call it autistic. It is far too braod to the point it might not exist at all. The high functioning stuff in particular is mostly just behavioural maladaptivity and should be corrected with behavioral measures.
