I think a lot of authors (especially younger ones) have absolutely no idea how much alcohol a human being can drink before dying of alcohol poisoning.
I've read some very amusing stories where characters basically drank 5 bottles of Vodka in one go and were at best slightly tipsy.

Haha, or how much alcohol it takes to get someone drunk. One beer will not get you drunk, unless you're a super duper light weight.

Yeah, that's the other side. It's really kind of adorable.

But that one's so EASY to get right! Like, five-seconds-in-Google easy. Who was writing these stories, Stephen Moffat?

Nah, some (probably very young) authors with strong Mary-Sue vibes in their stories.

...doh, it never occurred to me to just Google it. Probably because different people have different tolerance levels so I guess I figured there wouldn't be a standard answer. Ah, well, at least now I know I wasn't far off (i.e. handful of strong shots to get drunk).

There's no way there's anything menaingfully close to a 'norm' of how much it takes to get you drunk. There's just too many factors at play to the point what could get someone tipsy could get someone else legless blacked out.

Yeah, that's what I figured, but there seems to be some general basics, like probably very few people blacking out from one beer or, like OP mentioned, just giggly after several bottles of vodka.

Pretty much this yeah. There's some hard upper and lower limits (though some asians have issues with breakig down alcohol to a certain gene, so even a beer can get them fucked if they're occasional drinkers), but within that just endless variation.

Adding on to this: I know it effects people differently, but some young writers seem to have NO IDEA what being drunk is like.
