Isabela and Fenris are white!

I do not get where this idea that they're POC comes from.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh what?

They are definitely not. Isabela at least definitely is not.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Isabela is about the same skintone as Johnny Dep in PotC. They are pirates who spend excessive time under the sun. Hence the heavy tan.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd agree in Isabela's case, but Fenris clearly is supposed to be dark-skinned. (Not gonna touch the whole POC thing, though.)

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Isabela is absolutely not white.

And Fenris? I'd say his skin tone could easily make him be non-white, but his sister is a little lighter skinned and has red hair. But then again he's also an elf, so he's not really anyway.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Isabela's skin tone in Origins was the SECOND DARKEST POSSIBLE skin tone (as one DA creator who designed her actually pointed out when angry racist people were made that she's obviously not white in DA2). In Dragon Age 2 she is obviously dark skinned, and with her black hair, I'm pretty baffled why you would conclude she was white. I'm not sure you could get any more obviously not white unless you were Vivienne.

Plus, you do realize that non-white people can still be light skinned right? Which doesn't apply to Isabela anyway.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Non-white people can still be light skinned

And white people can still be dark skinned, so what exactly are you basing the "Fenris and Isabela are POC" on?

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Because she's the second darkest possible skin type? And her very designer got defensive and posted exactly that on the Bioware message boards this when people were freaking out because "DA2 had made her black when she was so obviously white in the original game"? She's always been nearly as dark as the game allows.

If you're really set on Isabela being white then hey, that's your business. But it's not fandom that has the problem here, when she's infinitely more likely to be not-white than white.

Re: Doing it wrong

It comes from...the fact that their skin tone is definitely a few shades darker than white? C'mon, next you'll be saying Zevran is white too.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhh, it reealy depends? I don't apply real world racial structurs to fictional characters, but if I did, I'd say Zevran is white because he is clearly from the Spain-equivalent of Thedas. And no matter how much some Americans like to do this, Spanish people are not actually considered/don't consider themselves ~POC~.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Zevran is actually from Italy. Yeah, they have Spanish accents, but word is that's because David Gaider was set on making a Puss in Boots (from Shrek) type character that became Zevran. But the country Antiva is supposed to parallel Italy, so, Mediterranean people who are naturally tanner.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Spainitaly, then. Other than Orlais, which is very aggressively stereotype-France, most Thedas countries aren't entirely the same as real world countries, even if they have similarities (Although... Tevinter was Roman Empire-ish, right?).

Still, Mediterranian people in general rarely if ever consider themselves POC.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought that Tevinter was America.

Their war with the 'tribal' Qunari over taking of the land always struck me as America wiping out the first nation people.

Tevinter being hated by every other nation also fits.

Then there is their love of slavery. I'm not saying that America is the only nation to have had slaves, but they are the nation that hung on to slavery far longer than any other nation. Let's be honest Tevinter and America were both built on slavery.

Plus the whole thing with the blight kicked off because of Tevinter arrogance. Again, I'm not saying america is the only arrogant nation, but arrogance it a part of the american image.

Other than all that Tevinter being rome simply does not fit. Rome is part of italy, and italy in Thedas is Antiva.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
He could be. He certainly looks white, Whiter than Sten who is definitely white. But to be fair Zev looking white could be an elf thing - there are no elves with dark skin, you ever notice that? I will admit Zev is possibly meant as a POC based on the accent, but it's by no means written in stone.

And Isabela and Fenris having slightly darker skin tones than the rest is likely environmental. Isabela being darker skinned in the second game - not the first game, though, notice that? - could be a reference to the amount of time pirates send under the sun. Fenris comes from a tropical continent, doesn't he?

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, Isabela was the second darkest possible skin tone in Dragon Age Origins. It's just hard to tell because of the tavern lighting, but if you look at her model, she is very dark skinned and very obviously not white.

Re: Doing it wrong

Nope, Isabela was the second darkest possible skin tone in Dragon Age Origins

That counts for fuck all when they 3rd darkest skintone is Alistair.

Being tanned is not the same thing as being black.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So how else would you represent non-white people in Dragon Age if not giving them the darkest skin shades? Or is only the very darkest skin shade permissible to be non-white character(so, a darker black person)? Or would that also be simply "a tan white person" to you?

Whut? Sten isn't white either! Why do you think this? Why? Just seriously, why?

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sten? Sten is absolutely white. Are you kidding? Look at the rest of the Qunari, they are all excessively white.

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say.... purplish-grey? Sten though is just a nondescript brown.

Canonically, Isabella is from Rivain, which is on the far side of Antiva and roughly equates to "Moorish Spain." Her people range from Halle Berry to Djimon Honsou in complexion; she's on the lighter end of that scale, but definitely could not pass aw "white."

Re: Doing it wrong

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and there are white Africans in this world, they're probably about the same shade as Isabela. I admit it's possible she is a OC from this country, but it's equally possibly she's a white person from this country.

Combine that with the fact that she get's darker from the first game - Where she is duelling, not pirating, in this worlds equivalent to england with zero sunlight. Just seems really likley she was white and got tanned being at sea.

...poc are capable of tanning too. I am one of those people. Why is it so important to you that she is white?

This is a really great troll! I'm impressed. It's even in-fandom trolling, which is the best kind of trolling, and works from wank that is just borderline believable in a community of this sort. I think the troll went a bit overboard and showed her face way too quickly, which I wouldn't have done - better to certainly gradually increase the arguments but they kind of jumped off the edge and went too obvious at the end.

Still, I'd say this is the best we've had in quite awhile. A solid 9.6/10. Good work.
