Guns, pretty much everything about them.

This. My all-time favorite is BBC John Watson playing Russian roulette with his pistol. That one occurred multiple times, and I'm really not sure how the people writing it were physically picturing the act.

Like, the modern Sherlock? I suck at guns, but wouldn't that mean if the gun was loaded, he'd die?

if there was a single bullet in it he'd die because a pistol is not a revolver.

I still don't know if it's appropriate to refer to a gun's magazine as a "clip" because I've seen some gun enthusiasts go lol at doing so, but so many published authors still do it anyway. So I just default to "mag".

Colloquially they are used interchangeably, but technically they are not the same thing. A clip is a stamped piece of metal that is used to hold bullets and to assist with loading. A magazine has functional parts like a spring, a follower, and a floor plate and feeds bullets into a chamber. A magazine can be detachable or a permanent piece of the firearm. A magazine is integral, a clip is a tool. There are grey areas, like the m1 garand's en bloc clip, but that's the general rule.

Thank you for the rundown (been a long time since I read up on it). It can be tricky choosing between between the colloquial or technical usage when I don't actually know much about the topic myself, so I don't feel enough authority to be like "this is wrong and I should never do it/correct others doing it".
