No. No we can't. There are a hundred reasons for someone to not identify with the feminist movement.

I still consider myself one, but the amount of times someone has tried to oust me or tell me I can't be a feminist because I am a man is staggering. If I were more reactive or had a thinner skin I might have also been pretty discouraged by encountering this kind of discrimination from people calling themselves feminists.

No. What I mean is, if he doesn't identify as a feminist, he's not a feminist. He may have good reasons for not identifying as a feminist; I have no idea. But you can't just pretend that he's a secret feminist.

That's not what I was getting at. I'm not claiming anyone for any movement if they don't wish to be a part of that movement.

I was just using it as shorthand to denote that their beliefs align with the core belief system (i.e. gender equality, not being a complete d-bag) of feminism.

Although I still reject (as see below) the understanding of what it means to be a feminist that you're referring to here, but I see the point you were making was something separate from that idea.

I think that anon thought you were claiming him as a feminist even if he didn't want to be one, not that he was reluctant to use the label even though he wants to.

I sure don't jive with some of the beliefs or arguments some of the more radical feminist groups have put forward in my day, after all.
