Correcting people.

I grew up in a family of nerds where one of us correcting another would usually get a response of "Oh really? That's interesting," maybe with some follow-up questions before going back to the original conversation. It was a shock to go out into the real world and have people get mad at me. I'm still working on it.

The secret is to correct in a way that still compliments the person you're correcting. I can get away with something like this most of the time just by acknowledging that the source of the information is wrong and not implying that the individual was wrong for thinking so.

Yeah I've noticed but I tend to focus my efforts on just keeping my mouth shut rather than adjusting the habit. It's frustrating to go from being around people who will let me just happily blurt out something that I think is interesting and wanted to share to being around people who are ready to think I'm trying to prove I'm smarter than them or something, so I kind of just want to avoid the whole thing. Which is weird because normally I have no problem censoring myself and carefully considering my words.

There are ways to correct people and ways to not. I'm much less likely to be bothered by a "hey fun fact!" correction that seeks to expand knowledge than I am a "but it's ___" that just seeks to demonstrate superiority, or even just mindlessly correct something because it Just Bothers You!. My sister does the latter a lot, and it kinda pisses me off. I think she's doing it for the Just Bothers Me reason but it always sounds like she's trying to lord it over me.
