Food stuff you can't eat anymore

(Anonymous) 2015-05-20 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm eating an apple for the first time in years, and it got me thinking. My father used to buy them so often when I still lived at his place that once I moved out I didn't touch them for years. Same thing happened with certain brand of bread.

I also once ate a meatball that had gone bad (it had this... gravel-like texture) and I still can't touch meatballs.

So F!S, what's some stuff you ate a lot before and now can't eat anymore either because of oversaturation or a bad one?

After I left college, I really didn't want to eat instant ramen again for a good long while.

Parsnips. I have a strange reaction to them. Not allergenic per se, but when I'm eating them I have this sudden "pang of revulsion" that I really can't describe.

I really don't know why I had a passion for sauteed pig livers as a kid but now even the thought makes me vaguely ill.

A bit TMI

Well, recently I've learned the hard way that I can't eat large quantities of the majority of veggies any more. Anything more than a leaf of lettuce or a slice of tomato and my stomach rebels. I can't digest the stuff. Goes in one way and out the same way. I know, ew.

Now fruit, I'm okay with fruit.

Bananas.

They used to be my favorite food, especially when mixed with peanut butter, but I guess I must have eaten them too much, because I stopped for a while. I did try eating one again recently, but I couldn't get it down. :( I still like banana bread, though, and in smoothies I can tolerate it, but no more straight up bananas.

Potato bread. I once ate some, thinking the white stuff on top was just some of that flour that is like...dusted on it. It was not. It was mold.

Also, Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup. Lived off that crap in college.

Grapefruit. But not because of either thing, because it interacts with medication I take.

I have the opposite issue. I'm constantly discovering things I rejected as a child (I have a very poor sense of taste and so I tend to rely on texture, and most things are not pleasing to put in my mouth -- and my mom was never a very good cook anyway) are actually pretty good.

Bananas weren't my favorite fruit, but I could eat them just fine as a kid. But somehow I've developed an...idk allergic reaction to them as an adult? I get stomach/bowel cramps and nausea from everything that even contains traces of banana. I've always wondered why this suddenly surfaced. It's not big deal, I miss eating banana split and deep-fried bananas though.

As a kid I loved butter. Like really, really loved it. One day I just didn't like it anymore. I still don't, and now it just makes me nauseous.

I can still eat it melted on like toast or something though.

I can't bring myself to eat hummus anymore, since about a day or two after I had some, I came down with a really bad bout of Norovirus (which I suspect probably came from a shopping mall trip the weekend before Christmas instead). :/

I can't drink booze any more :( I had a major illness in the last year, and one of the things that has stayed with me coming out the otherside is a complete intolerence to alcohol. Not the fun type of intolerance where you just get drunk really easily, no I got the alcohol literally burns a hole in my stomach lining in a way not even my own stomach acids do. And I do mean literally. My stomach lining now dissolves on contact with alcohol, even very small quantities. My doctor has never seen anything like it, it took a lot of tests to find out. I liked booze too. I really did. However it now comes with a risk of death. And not the theoretical risk in the way that if you drink too much in twenty years your liver might implode risk, a sort of risk that my stomach lining dissolves and stomach acid starts pouring into the rest of my abdomen and blood stream way.

I noticed it several years ago with anything avocados related how my throat will feel like it wants to closed up and it was a weird catch when swallowing. Then last fall raw carrots created the same sensation. I noticed it if I ate two bananas in a row.

Come to find out I have oral allergy syndrome and am allergic to latex, birch trees, grass and weeds. It's weird as we're in pollen season and while I don't exhibit the normal signs of allergies (watery burning eyes, sneezing) I am allergic to some things.

Avocados taste so good too but I don't want to risk the chance I'll need an epi-pen (haven't bought one since I figure I'll just avoid most raw fruit).

As a very young kid, I loved butter so much, I'd eat it straight from the stick until I got so sick of it that it took me several years before I could put it on toast and stuff again.

And I had KFC one night as a child and became violently ill, so I avoided that for years as well.

I've also been avoiding Burger King for the most for about 4 years now after getting violent sick after eating there.

I had to give up coffee when I figured out it was the reason I had diarrhea all the time. I keep meaning to try low-acid coffee, but the grocery store nearest me doesn't have it and since it's a big store, I don't know where else would be a better bet.

Apples give me a weird, unpleasant feeling in my stomach. Ony seems to happen with raw apples, not apple sauce or pie. I can eat a few slices or a helping of fruit salad with apples just fine, but not a whole apple. I avoid eating more than the equivalent of half a raw apple in a sitting.

I no longer like extremely sweet things or eating too much sugar in too short a span of time.

As two people have said, bananas. Cooked is okay, flavoring is fine, but just eating a raw banana is enough to make me curl into a ball of pain and cramp and feel like hurling for hours.

For years I wouldn't eat chocolate covered pretzels because I once binged on them as a kid and it made me so nauseous. Just the thought or smell of them made me feel sick. (I've had them since, and love them. Still don't eat over a couple.)

The only kind of milk I use is 1% (for cooking) and soy or almond milk (for cereal). The last time I drank milk that wasn't soy I felt like I couldn't breathe for a half hour. (I guess I had an allergic reaction? Idk.)

I'm typically fine with milk and milk products as long as it's been cooked and isn't excessive. (Not that I can't have, say, cheesecake or ice cream, but I watch my portions.)

Eggs. We had a quiche party the night before I woke up with a kidney infection. Can't touch them. I don't mind them in things like cake, but if I can taste them it literally makes me sick.

I started showing symptoms of Celiac a few years ago and had to go gluten free. I miss some of the mainstream things but most of the alternatives are quite tasty. It's a small price to not feel pain all day, every day, and that's enough motivation to eat clean.

Most of the time. :/

I would kill for a gluten free mozzarella stick though. I cannot figure out how to make them myself and I miss them terribly.

I didn't eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for years because I had one as a kid that tasted gross. I actually made one for myself a few months ago, for the first time in a couple of decades. It was okay, but I think it's kind of overrated since I've since had so many other kinds of peanut butter + ingredient sandwiches that are so good (honey, banana, Nutella, coconut...)

When I was a kid I got food poisoning several times. I can't eat anything with red sauce (pizza, spaghetti, etc), or apricots because of it.

I can't drink due to allergies and sensitivity that could be hazardous. You have no idea how socially debilitating it is.

On Christmas Eve, my family always traditionally ate cold seafood like smoked fish and small shrimps. The shrimps were eaten raw with lemon and I loved them. I haven't liked to eat them for a long time now - even though I don't mind the taste, I can't eat them anymore because I really hate this slightly rubbery texture most shrimps (and other seafoods) have. It makes me gag.
The texture is the reason I don't want to ever eat liver again. When I was a child, I liked liver wurst and liver pâté, but after I once tried actual fried liver, the weird texture made me sick and I can't really eat it anymore.

In general, with most foods I don't eat it's a matter of texture, not taste.
