I can't believe people are okay with the second statement in the least... calling something you're choosing to do to your own body (which by the way, belongs to YOU and you alone) "vandalism" is ridiculous, vandalism is done to someone else's property. even if you want to completely fuck up your face with botox, "vandalism" is a stupid term to use unless you believe a celebrity's face belongs to you or anyone else. it could also very easily apply to all the shitty tattoos Kristen Stewart has, but I guess those are an okay form of "vandalism" to her.

I think it could have been phrased better but I think the underlying sentiment is not disagreeable & it's certainly not the kind of thing that would lead me to decide that she's a terrible person

Like, I'm sorry, but no. She's steeped in a culture where women are pretty much forced into plastic surgery or they lose their livelihood.

Well actually, legally, your body doesn't belong to you. Your body isn't property. This is very important because if you can own your body that means you can sell it or parts of it and...well...that never ends well.

But legally you CAN sell or donate parts of your body if it's your decision to get rid of them? As long as it's not something that'll kill you to get rid of. But that's illegal because it's suicide (and assisted suicide from the person buying the body part), which is illegal because it's murder. And it's illegal to sell your whole body because that means someone else now owns it, and owning another person is illegal.

Self-conducted suicide is not per se illegal, but it often leads to psychiatric confinement and/or mischief charges if one survives.

Where do you live where it's legal to sell parts of your body?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose if you count hair and eggs and sperm, maybe. . .

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't sell any of those where I live, only donate. I think you can in the US though.

I'm pretty sure she's not using the word vandalism to imply she thinks her (or anyobdy's face) is public property - it's not the best choice of words, but I think it's a strech to assume she means anything more than "pointless destruction". But, anyway, I'm okay with her being very negative about plastic surgery (it's not like she's talking about face reconstruction), so... *shrugs*

//I'm not going to call anybody evil or forbid them to do whatever they want with their bodies, but, still, my private opinion about it is very, very negative, the more people use plastic surgery for purely easthetic reasons, the more nromalised it becomes. The "beauty standard" bar moves higher and higher, and the social expectations follow suit. So, yeah, I do believe it more of a negative phenomenon than anything else//
