Best Time to Post to AO3 in Popular Fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I just posted to AO3 for the first time in a very popular fandom and my fic very quickly disappeared from the first page. In your experience, what's the best time to post to get the most people to see it?

If it's a very popular fandom, there's probably going to be a level of activity where no matter what time you choose to post it's not going to stay on the front page for long.

Some people say Sundays are good times for posting, but I've been writing posting and reading fic for years and I've never really noticed any particular time that's more successful than others. Having a wider breadth of fic promo seems more effective, i.e. post it on AO3, link it on your Tumblr/whatever, make sure it's tagged efficiently.

I don't post on AO3, but when I publish gifs or graphics or whatever on Tumblr I always get a lot more notes if I publish it when it's late afternoon - early evening in the US. I assume it's because it's around that time people get off work or school and got time to dick around online.

Yeah, at an old job of mine, we had someone from Tumblr come give a talk about how people are using social media (this had nothing to do with my job, I don't really know why), and she said Tumblr's highest traffic time is 7 PM US-Eastern. This was several years ago, but I doubt it has changed.

Hmm. I've never thought about it.

I would say just make sure you tag it well, because I always filter by character/pairing instead of seeing what is new.

This. I don't bother with the front page of my big fandoms, too much crap to wade through. I check specific pairing tags every day, though.

I have no fucking clue. Like fingal said, I think if it's a super huge/active fandom most people filter down. I think it matters a lot more on sites like FFN than Ao3, although FFN also has filters.
