Question thread

I know it's not been long since we had our last one, but my google-fu is failing me so figured maybe you guys could help.

Long term effects of spending time underground?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
My RP group is on a summer break, and it's my task to haul their asses from point A to point B for next fall. This includes characters spending about a month underground. I've read about the Chilean miners that got stuck in that mine, but that's about the only useful stuff I've found.

They of course move about, and they do fight. There's food, though it's not diverse (looking like some meat and mushrooms atm) and water is okay for the most part. Light source is available also, and two characters can see in the dark.

So I'm trying to figure out what are the long-term effects of a long stay underground? D-vitamin deficiency is of course one, but how bad does it get in a month? How would their diet affect them? How would their eyes react to being in the dark for long? What other sort of stuff should I take into account?

Also if anyone does know anything about water formation in caves, that would be cool. Can they have access to water? Also if the cave goes under (a pretty shallow) sea at some point would the cave have salty water or fresh water?

Educated guesses are more than welcome.

There are psychological effects of lack of sunlight that show up most often as seasonal affective disorder -- they have special full-spectrum lamps on submarines to stave that off.

What kind of light is available? Is there a lot of ambient noise? How keep underground are they? How built up is the area (are there room with furniture or just an empty cave)?

They'd probably suffer from depression. Maybe look up symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Their sleep patterns would become a mess.

Other vitamin deficiencies could come into question (scurvy?) and mild food poisoning and other gastric problems, depending on the food sources.

It's quite possible to have water in the caves, such as underground streams or condensed water. It wouldn't necessarily have to be salty water, if the source of the stream is running from the land (think rivers running into the ocean).

legit work-from-home opportunities

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Because of my own disability and a need to be home to help care for disabled relatives, I haven't had a job in quite awhile. Now that I'm looking, I'm having a very hard time finding a job that I'm physically capable of that isn't outside the range of public transportation. I've been trying to find online work-from-home opportunities, and I'm having terrible luck.

My sister and I are struggling financially. We haven't been able to see our doctors in months, and we're starting to have problems paying our bills and buying food. At this point, we're managing to pay rent (which fortunately includes utilities) and the internet/landline (which we have to keep up because my sister works from home), but we're in a lot of debt we can't do anything about. If I were making even a couple hundred dollars a month, it would really help. Ideas?

Transcription. It is a boring, tedious, sucky job. But you can do it from home.

If you have a fairly nice voice* perhaps see if you can find work you can do over the phone, like surveys or maybe sales (or heck, even for one of those sex phones if you're not averse to that)

I know when I worked with surveys I could do it from home at least as long as I had internet and a computer.

Question for people who have Beta'd

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever beta'd for someone who didn't take your suggestions but thanked you and you felt embarrassed to be associated with the finished work?

Give me your beta horror stories.

I'm starting to be impressed with this one writer's characterization, but I cannot get him to stop using comma splices. Not even cool comma splices--he just stitches sentences together at random. It's pretty frustrating.

Re: Question for people who have Beta'd

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Not exactly a beta horror story, but I once did some freebie professional editing on a novel-length original work for a friend-of-a-friend.

By the time I finished with this thing, I was told that the writer's gone ahead and published it anyway, with all the mistakes I'd pointed out (both grammatical and factual) still in place.

So not only did they completely waste my time, all the reviews that subsequently came in for it criticized the very (easily fixed) issues I'd pointed out. Very, very frustrating.

AO3

I have a completed chaptered fic to post. Is it more considerate to post the entire thing at once or post a chapter a day? What's the polite thing to do? It's for an old(er) fandom, so it's not going to get a lot of clicks. It's 100K words and 20 chapters of varying lengths, if that helps any.

Thanks!

Re: AO3

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH, from my point of view, I don't think it would make much difference either way, especially if it's for an older, less active fandom.

Well, one a day would get you more reviews. And more people would read it. Just put the chapter as ?/20 so that people know it is complete and won't avoid reading it.

I prefer all at once if it's complete and you aren't planning on doing any last minute editing.

How to bruise less?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it possible? Like in diet, or just "toughening up"? Two months ago I joined a very intense, very combative Mixed Martial Arts class. And now I am totally covered in bruises. My legs and arms especially from grabs, kicks, punches, etc. Some pretty enormous. I'm not at all complaining about the level of contact in the class, I actually really enjoy it and the pain rarely registers much with me. But I have so many bruises I feel like I need to wear long pants and long sleeves or people will think I'm an abuse victim or something.

So... any way to not bruise? I have somewhat light skin, if that makes a difference.

Some of these are more effective than others

Best Time to Post to AO3 in Popular Fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-05-21 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I just posted to AO3 for the first time in a very popular fandom and my fic very quickly disappeared from the first page. In your experience, what's the best time to post to get the most people to see it?

Cake and Presents Questions

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-05-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
As I mentioned once before, my sister, her boyfriend, and my little sister have birthdays one after another. So I have many questions.

1) I am getting them an icecream cake to share because they can't decide on a regular one. I want to get something on it that alludes to the fact they were all conceived mid-November. Anyone got an ideas for something funny to write (no cursing because I doubt the company will write that and I got terrible handwriting).

2) I am getting my sister a gag gift. It know I want it to be a body pillow with something printed on it. I want to do her dog or Tom Hardy. The dog would be hilarious BUT I am afraid when he one day dies, it will be a depressing remainder. Tom Hardy is cool but I don't know if I can find a pillow with him on it. Any ideas?

3) My little sister is an art major but when she moved to OK she had to leave all her supplies. Sooo, I want to buy her some. She says she missing painting the most. What are some good brands of paint/brushes? What would you recommend I get her (a canvas? A lot of different color paints)?

Beekeeping

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I want to start beekeeping (what with the bees dying and all). My boss said I could keep a hive outside our work building (it has a huge back area with nothing in it) since keeping bees is illegal in my city limits. Where can I start?

I know there is a class I can go to held by our state's bee keeping organization but it is not until October. Are there online classes I can take before that?

Is it a worthwhile hobby?

Question about post-op transwomen

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm working on a Zombie Apocalypse web/comic idea and one of my characters is trans. I am really curious about what happens to a post-op MtF if they don't have access to estrogen and such for a prolong time? The only info I've come close to finding was from Orange is the New Black but I haven't been able to find anything else online. This has really been holding up progress on my idea so hopefully someone can help.

Curious anon wants to know, what happened to good ol' Jaybie?

Editing old fic on AO3

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
So, I have a bunch of fic from forever ago that I'd like to update with various things now. However, most of these are pretty minor (spelling errors, chapter titles, updating the tags to be more accurate, fixing factual errors, occasionally changing a paragraph here and there, cleaning up author's notes, etc - essentially, very little content actually changed).

However, I feel kind of bad for updating it on AO3, because as far as I can tell it automatically bumps the work up to the "most recently updated!" list, which is... misleading at best, especially in the small fandom I'm in and considering that I've been largely absent for the last few years due to what I've recently realized is Actual Depression and not Just Being Lazy, and am highly unlikely to magically solve this and come back in the next few weeks. Is there a better way to do all this, or should I just suck it up, make the changes, and realize that no one actually cares that much and at worst someone will re-read a fic of mine and waste about five minutes of their life?
