Daredevil (major spoilers)
The cast is great, the writing is nice, the show looks beautiful and the action scenes are spot on. I wish season two was out already.
Who's your favorite character? Do you ship? What would you like to see happen next?
I personally am very attached to Matt (He has the best smile, and his tears hurt me yet at the same time give me life. I love him and his ridiculous parkour ways) but Foggy is the standout for me. I was not expecting to fall headfirst for him, but he is adorable and I constantly want to hug him. He and Matt have one of the best friendships I've seen recently, and I was cooing at all their scenes together. (Avocados! And Foggy was totally checking Matt out the first time they met, don't lie.)
I was also surprised at how much I grew to like Wesley, considering... He's a shit person who does terrible things. I think it's a combination of the writing, his devotion to Fisk, and the actors charm. I'm upset he died in such a dumb way. He seemed smarter than that!
I however, am not upset with Karen because she did the only reasonable thing she could have in her situation. And I'm pretty proud of Karen on a whole, for pushing through and being proactive despite the risk to her life. She's amazing.
I also really liked Claire, but I wish she had been in more episodes. Apparently she'll be back for season two, so I hope we see a good bit more of her then.
What happened to Ben and Elena tore me up. Also Matt's dad. (EVERYTHING IS UNFAIR. LIFE SUCKS.) This show made me cry a lot, jfc. Should've expected that after Spartacus.
I'm sort of hoping Vanessa becomes one of the antagonists next season... I think she could make an interesting villain. I'm not disappointed Fisk is locked up, though there's no guarantee he'll stay there; never did I think Vincent could be so terrifying, but boy was I wrong. Wooow, he has a hell of an intimidating presence. That car scene... Ugh.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
The only character I was not a fan of was Fisk. He was also my least favorite villain. D:
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
But damn, Daredevil was on a different level... I almost wish Agent Carter could've been on Netflix now. (Bigger budget, etc.)
I liked Fisk as a villain, but not as a person. (Yet I ship Fisk/Wesley so what am I doing.) He was extremely scary to me (because at any moment he felt like he could snap), but he isn't my favorite. Then again, I've said this before, I don't think Marvel always does great antagonists, but I feel like they did a much better job than usual with these.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
Wesley's appeal is that he's a sharply dressed (even maybe a bit old-fashioned) good-looking professional with a snarky side. He's also a little on the thinner side which I think may play a factor.
I was also surprised at how well Fisk was played in this series. They did a lot to make him a sympathetic villain -- he's VERY intimidating, but also human, not just a cartoon character, and it's clear that he does have what could be argued to be a positive vision for Hell's Kitchen, he just goes about it in a very negative, harmful way as "a necessary evil." He comes off as legitimately pragmatic, and not just an evil asshole pretending to be pragmatic.
I'm also really grateful he didn't namedrop "kingpin" at any point in the series, not even in the final fight in the alley.
Speaking of fights, how 'bout that Oldboy homage eh?
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
I totally agree, Wesley is a good looking professional and I love his snark. I also found his distaste for violence kind of endearing. Which is crazy considering his job and the shit he threatens people with and orders on a regular basis, but it was a nice change to see an antagonist that didn't necessarily want to get their hands messy. Also, like I said, his devotion to Fisk felt oddly sweet so that helped make him more human in my eyes.
And Fisk was much better than I would've expected, but everything was really. I knew D'Orofrio was a talented actor, but I've never seen him so vicious and intimidating before. (And alternately, almost childlike and insecure in some scenes. It was an interesting contrast.) I liked his origin story, and even though I wasn't exactly willing him to succeed at any point, I appreciated that he didn't come off as simply power hungry. You see a lot of that with antagonists, and it can be boring. At least Fisk had a goal, and even if he was wrong I enjoyed watching him.
That fight scene was SO good. I was holding my breath in amazement/anticipation. Marvel did a good job of making the action in this brutal, yet entertaining as hell.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 12:28 am (UTC)(link)My favorite is Matt too. I like him flinging laptops in rage the most. Followed by him crying in the ugliest sweatpants ever.
That car scene fucked me up for days and I had nightmares.
I want to like Karen but I saw comic book spoiler and I just feel like she will always be that character that ~accidentally~ fucks everything up for everybody and I can't unsee it. That and she just wouldn't let it go and Ben got fucked over.
I wish I could have liked Fisk more, but he was just generic and his relationship with Vanessa was creepy since he raged out and did the car thing for a women he just met and slightly illogical that she was so ok with what he was doing.
I kind of hope that Fisk stays in prison and breaks out at the end of season two, so it gives us a season break from him. And I really hope the next villain is a bit better, but this is Marvel so I know it won't happen.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
The car scene made me ew out loud. I always think I'm desensitized to violence then I see something like that and my jaw drops.
I definitely agree that Fisk was creepy, not even just with Vanessa, but in general. What he did was a massive, disturbing as hell overreaction, but at the same time that made me fear him in a way I haven't really feared the MCU antagonists before. I thought he was compelling but not exactly likable. Still infinitely better than the other MCU villains imo, excluding Loki.
But I hope for a better antagonist too; there's always room for improvement! It would indeed make sense for Fisk to stay in jail until the end of the second season; then he and Vanessa could team up?
Oh, and I forgot to respond to your Karen comment. I don't know what happens in the comics, but maybe things won't happen in the same way. I can't fault Karen for not giving up because that's what protagonists do, they keep fighting for what they believe in, even if its sometimes not the smartest idea. Karen made mistakes, won't deny that, but like Ben's wife said... If he wasn't interested he wouldn't have gotten involved. (I do wish Karen hadn't took him to see Fisk's mother, that was risky, but... Again, people make dumb mistakes, look at Wesley.)
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 01:56 am (UTC)(link)Yeah I wasn't expecting it to get that graphic honestly. The car, the guys broken arm, kind of the Nobu fight with Matt getting slashed up. I don't even think the MCU films have been that graphic.
I guess when you compare Fisk up to the other MCU villain he is a new kind of terror, especially given his manipulative powers. I guess I was just expecting him to be more like the other villains and more hands on fighting all the time? Mostly given on that's how Matt is.
I'd kind of like next season to be Bullseye if they tied it in that he was the rifleman who shot that detective and was hired by Fisk. But they could be bringing in Gladiator (don't search unless you want spoilers, he was introduced this last season). I'd kind of like Vanessa to be MIA and her come back for Fisk with help for him. It'd be a nice villain duo romantic gesture.
It may not. They also changed up this one thing, but eluded to it. I think the reason why I semi fault her is she knew she was crossing boundaries bringing Ben there. He wanted out to take care of his wife, and she brought him there on the pretense she was helping him find his wife a nursing home. I know she'll beat herself up for it next season so I'm trying not to hate her too bad. Though I kind of hope the go comic book route with her because I'd love to see the fallout and Matt in that shirt. I'm terrible.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
I think because it's on Netflix they have a lot more freedom to do things like they want. The other shows are on popular, family networks, and the MCU films are blockbusters that people of all ages see. Daredevil doesn't seem to fit into the same category; it feels more mature and less constrained.
He did fight Matt one on one twice! But no, Fisk was def more the kind of guy to use his brains than brawn, which is kind of ironic considering his size. I find that kind of neat, though. (But I do hope the next big bad is more hands on. I don't blame you there.)
I don't know who these people are but I feel like I should read the comics to find out. Or at least their wiki pages! Until then, I trust your judgement! (And I have no own big wishes for next season beyond MORE, so this fits just fine)
Oh, yea. :( I do agree she shouldn't have taken Ben to the nursing home without telling him the truth; that was hella shady and felt kind of cruel and disrespectful. I know she didn't mean to hurt him and what she was trying to do was important, but she should've been honest. Hopefully she learns this lesson well. (Is it the “I'm not Daredevil" shirt? That is a thing of beauty.)
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 04:16 am (UTC)(link)I think the MCU could afford to drop some of there fouler humor (I mean hell, they made a joke about reinstating prima nocte - a king or lord could claim the first night with any wife) and make it a little darker. I guess it will just feel weird when the bring Daredevil into the MCU and he'll be kid friendly. I do hope Matt shows up in Civil War.
I don't read the comics I was just unfortunate to come across the spoilers. Gladiator could be interesting, but not sure if they'd do him right away. Actually I didn't even know until looking at a list of the villains today that Daredevil and Spiderman share a few of the same ones. I'd die for a crossover but that would take forever since Spidey will have to be in Civil War first.
Well if they make her like her comic book iteration... Let's just say it's not good or happy for her. Which is why I'm inclined to feel bad for her and not hate her.
So you know about the "I'm not Daredevil shirt?"? I'm dying for that to happen. I don't know why but I sense we won't get it until season three, if we get a third season.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
Mostly because of the writing quality, which was like some kind of horrible pendulum. It'd go from a brilliantly written scene right into one that threw out the most horrendous clichés imaginable... There were actually a couple of instances where my SO, who I watched it with, turned to me and quoted lines before people actually said them.
It was just so bizarrely good and bad at the same time that it kind of lands right in mediocre territory for both of us, I think. It wasn't helped by the fact that we both thought the dude playing Matt Murdock was a butterface (however, we both found Karen impossibly gorgeous, so that made up for it a little bit).
I don't know. I can't hate this show, but I can't like it either.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
I was also blown away by how gorgeous Karen is, but I thought Matt was all kinds of attractive as well. One minute he's hot as hell, the next he's adorable and I want to pinch his cheeks. I thought he was a nice mixture of both.
We just have very different tastes, apparently. Which is okay; not everyone is going to be satisfied.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
...To be fair though, I'm still shipping the Russian mob brothers. Damn it. My weakness.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
I loved this show. My expectations were pretty much set at "pretend that the ninja turtles are kicking ass in the background and living underground in this universe, and this may be enjoyable", so ofc it exceeded them. The action scenes were great, pretty brutal actually, hot people everywhere, tailored suits everywhere, and grey grey grey grey grey themes.
The casting was awesome and had chemistry imo and, outside of Fisk, there wasn't a character I didn't enjoy or was totally charmed by. Foggy was really cute, and I thought he was going to annoy me throughout. Turns out he's the basedest and I felt for him during his fallout with Matt. Karen too! Holy crap she needs to talk to someone and unload about Wesley, and gdi I really liked her friendship/mentoring with Ben. But also gdi x 2 because CUTE AND COOL OLD PEOPLE like him and Elena. Elena was a perfect abuelita and Hispanic and Guatemala and nooooooooo. Now where the crap is the nurse who reminds of the Teen Wolf's Mom McCall? I liked her! Where did she go :U
Speaking of old, that Chinese Drug Mama Villain ♥ Damn was I crushing on her and her no-nonsense, and boy was I happy when she broke out the strength. It was so silly and bamf at the same time, and oh my heart is aflutter just thinking about it. I hope she comes back :) Unfortunately, Wesley never got in on the fist fighting I kept expecting to happen, but he was pretty and snarky to look at. His death scene and attempt to bluff out of his mistake was good for me, because I just liked how he pretty much set himself up for it because caring about Fisk sorta blinded him there (no one knew where or why he left, who he met, and he slipped up). These villains were sweet, and even Accountant Guy was great. Old people snarking and conspiring ♥ And the Russian Guy who made the last stand, oh man I really liked him and his stubborn shit.
Fisk though. Eh. I keep reading and hearing about how totally human this portrayal is, and how totally sympathetic and whatever, but I don't see it. Yes, the lines and background are there, he wanted to improve Hell's Kitchen with organized crime and gentrification yadda yadda. But Fisk was a bore to watch. I didn't get the impression the actor was reading his lines so much as the syllables, and it didn't help that his scenes with Vanessa were basically composed of bland platitudes that I kept groaning and hoping the show would get to the next scene already. Vanessa on the other hand actually piqued my interest once it became clear she's pretty off herself and willing to give up her life for Fisk. Kind of irks me that we didn't get to actually know much about her beyond being an elegant romantic interest from Not Hell's Kitchen.
My favourite thing, aside from everything, was how you don't hear anything blatant about superpowers, "kingpin", and hell you don't even see the suit or hear the titular name till the end. Reminds me a bit of Arrow on that.
Re: Daredevil (major spoilers)
I loved the dynamics of the cast; lots of fun friendships and relationships, of all kinds. Foggy and Karen and Elena were the cutest, and Karen and Ben had a nice thing going to. This show destroyed all happiness, lol. (Well, not ALL because avocados.) Claire the nurse will be back! I want more of hot nurse next season. I want to be as collected and cool as that woman.
Honestly, there wasn't a villain I didn't enjoy in this show, despite everyone being assholes. Fisk wasn't exactly charming, but almost everyone else was in their own way. Marvel doesn't do antagonists that I like often, so I'm pleased with this.
I guess what I like about Fisk is that he was actually scary. To me, anyway. I didn't feel sorry for him, but I do think he's more human than some of Marvel's other villains. He wasn't the most exciting dude, but I wasn't bored. I am hoping Vanessa has more to do later, though. They need to bring her back and show her in charge. She can do it.
