Text: I loved this movie and think a lot of complaints are stupid and/or misinterpreted.

However I dislike how it completely negates the all the events of IM3, CA2, and Thor 2.

-IM3: NO MORE IRON MAN SUITS (until AOU)
-CA2: No more SHIELD/Helicarrier
-Thor 2: Guise I am leaving Asgard to be on Earth

I've heard some of this is explained on AOS, but I hate the show so I'll never knowwwwwww.

This makes me so mad and confused too, and not in the "oh I better watch all the movies to understand why major plotpoints are gone" and more in a "well can't be fucked now i'll read the wiki in a few years" way.

Why wasn't I logged on, bad computer.

-IM3: NO MORE IRON MAN SUITS (until AOU)

He destroyed all the ones he had made in a PTSD-induced panic that were hastily constructed and shoddily made. There was nothing to indicate he was never making them again.

-CA2: No more SHIELD/Helicarrier

The helicarrier's destroyed were the three new ones with all the gadgets. The one in AoU was the old one from Avengers, or one similar, running on a skeleton crew. It wasn't technically "SHIELD".

-Thor 2: Guise I am leaving Asgard to be on Earth

In Thor 2 he didn't say he was leaving Asgard permanently, just that he wasn't taking the throne just yet, which worked out for Odin/Loki, because it meant he got to be in charge still.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had no trouble understanding any of this.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I got it all. It just felt cheap.

Maybe a note about how Tony built the HELL out of *this* suit and what it can do and how he learned/grew from his experiences? Nope. Just a new suit and a hulk buster.

And Fury can staff and store and fuel a Helicarrier without government funding? Bullshit. The cavalry moment was cool for a second but then it pissed me off. They have five members (at least) who can fly and we were told they "evacuated the city" if they cut the number of folks left they could have left out the carrier and had Sam and Rhodey be the Big Damn Heroes and make it all more desperate and personal.

Thor? What evs. He can do what ever. Have fun Thor. I hope it's pretty.

So. I "get" it. I understand it. I also think it's poorly done.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still a little iffy about Tony and his suits.
I thought his deal was he was suffering PTSD because he decided to become Iron Man, and the destroying suits was symbolic of letting go of that self-imposed burden. He said the suits were the result of him being paranoid something was going to go wrong and then in AoU he still has that same issue he had in IM3 except this time it's creating Ultron instead of suits.

I know his PTSD wasn't handled the best but the destroying suits felt pretty final considering all he went through.

Yeah I see what you mean and understand your frustration. It kind of fits the belief that everything is just a stop gap until the next truly big event (end of phase 3) doesn't it? I love all these films on the whole but as I sort of responded to a secret earlier in the week, it does feel like it is slowly being hampered by the "shit is going DOWN in...four films time, promise!" feeling.

EDIT: Though I WANT Thor back on Asgard because I'm sick of Earth in his films. Sorry :(

/seriously expecting Joss Whedon to care about other writers' continuity

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think his official reasoning was "I want people to be able to watch this movie without having to watch any of the other movies first".
(Not to say that's not a stupid reason but... yeah.)

...but wasn't the whole point of creating the MCU in the first place to make sure people have to watch (and pay money for, and/or be enticed to buy merch for) ALL the movies?

Honestly the fact it ignores those movies, and I didn't like how it handled character development (most notably Black Widows) - or lack of it, in some cases - is really my biggest complaint.

I thought the movie was just okay.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There were a lot of characters and so there was only so much room for interaction, which I wanted more of. And it felt like the movie just had way too much going on, too many storylines, and so we didn't get a whole lot of depth on most of them.

You can tell me these are stupid and/or misinterpreted, but they are what bothered me about the movie.

Saw it today, and this was my feeling as well. I was underwhelmed. There was too much action, and believe me, I love action.

Wasn't a big fan of some of the character stuff we did get, but there wasn't enough interaction for me. It felt waaaay too long as well as kind of disjointed.

ayrt

There were a couple of cute interactions (I liked the everyone-tries-to-lift-Thor's-hammer scene and I liked how Cap and Thor worked together and even thought the running gag on "Language!" was funny), but for the most part it seemed like everyone was off in a hundred different directions and only sporadically coming back into contact with each other. And yes, it did seem very disjointed in places, which makes me wonder what got cut.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just not the events of other movies, it suffers from it's own continuity fails.

The most obvious, IMO, is Sam. How did he move from "avenging is your thing" to being part of the new team?
There wasn't even one small line that explained that.
otakugal15: (Default)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2015-05-23 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, I KIND of think the entire MOVIE is the reasoning behind that. He hadn't met Steve yet and wasn't inspired to do any "avenging" in the first Avengers film.

He meets the Cap, helps him with the Shield/Hydra thing, then goes his own way.

Ultron was fucking EVERYWHERE, I think more so than the Hydra thing was. And since he now knew Steve and how the team was needing help to defeat this thing, he joined up. So seeing him at the end possibly joining is, in and of itself, his statement.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but then it's worth to wonder where he was during the final battle.

And honestly? That the movie had the "avenging is your thing" line just to
and let the audience assume why he's now an avenger is... not exactly something I would call good writing.

The fact that phase 2 is basically ignored in AoU is the main thing that bugs me tbh, I wanted to see how these events would affect the wider MCU and instead they were shrugged off, which seemed like a waste to me. (What's the point in dismantling Shield and having Fury pretend to be dead if you're just going to reverse that in the next movie?).

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Phase 2 is ignoring AoU because it was terrible and even the higher ups hated it. (Tales tell that a few VERY high ups were pissed about Clint having a family hidden away and about Joss trying to put in Planet Hulk references and well everything to do with Bruce)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think you mean that Phase 3 will ignore AoU, while nightscale was talking about AoU ignoring Phase 2.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom seems to have the same sentiments. I have never seen so many production/actor shots from CW than any other Marvel movie in my dash. Fandom seems to be really holding out for CW to be an AoU bandaid.

I'm hoping that last bit you said was true, though. Bruce is my favorite on the team and AoU was a bucket of sour grapes for me because of what Whedon did.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't heard anything about Clint's family, but I've heard the same thing about Planet Hulk references, including the whole "he splashed down in the Coral Sea" part being put in.

Well, Thor did leave Asgard to be on Earth. It obviously wasn't going to be permanent though, because Loki. I don't see how seeing a vision of his fears about doing so negates that?
