What job do you want but probably won't ever get? Why do you want it?

Re: Inspires by #1

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to be a make up artist, or a costume designer. I love playing with make up and sewing and reading about historical cosmetics/clothing and stuff like that.

I won't ever get those jobs cause I am aware that even though I enjoy both things, I'm not actually skilled enough in them. I'm mediocre at best.

TV/movie director or writer. I think it's far too late to go down that path, but damn, it looks like fun.

I'd love to write scripts, I even have ideas, but I hate the script format. That right there is a problem. :P Besides, there's a lot of politics in the TV/film industry I don't have the patience for. By the time I did become successful, I'd be the sort to have a temper tantrum on twitter.

I would love to be a professional or semi-professional film critic. I won't say I'll never get it, but for now I just enjoy doing it for fun.

It'd be interesting to go into politics, if it weren't for the fact that politicians are actually mostly just fundraisers these days.

Part of me would looove to be an anthropologist. But way too many courses I'd be horrible at, I'm already done school with no desire to go back, and honestly, I think I'm more of an armchair anthropologist.

I just love examining how people think and behave, I LOVE history, I love ancient history, and I find other cultures really interesting.

If things go right, I'm actually going to get my dream job. But when I was younger, I also wanted to become a veterinary doctor. It's just such an awesome job to do, what with all the animals, all the manual work and interesting cases. And of course the knowledge that you've saved or improved a life of a living being is very rewarding. James Herriot was one of my inspirations back then. I even went so far as to apply to some universities!

Certainly not going there now, though. I don't think I could handle the stress and the responsibility that come with this job.

Historian

I'd actually have to pick an area of focus so it would never happen but I'd love to spend all my time learning and reading really old stuff and debating other historians.

I wanted to be a church minister because I love theology and I thought it would be doing fandom in real life: write new meta and maybe a ficlet every week! I knew I'm not very good with people but I thought there would be, like, psychology classes or something to help minister trainees with handling things. Then I learnt that no training in the world would help me overcome my particular brand of "not very good with people"...

Re: Inspires by #1

I thought there would be, like, psychology classes or something

...you are kidding, right? 99% of "theology training" is "This is our brand, this is the party line, this is the only text/verse/part of the book that you use, this is what you do/say when the sheep get out of line, and if you depart from/don't do or say any of this yourself, YOU are out of line, and prepare to meet your Maker."

...the other .0001% is "Stand up there and say whatever you want, we don't even care."

Hard to find any religion/church that's in the middle of those two extremes, IME. Especially with the wide anti-science culture in most religions, these days, since psychology is (somewhat) a science now, after all.

I can't seem to find it now, but there was an article on Patheos that framed it in the reverse direction. College theology courses teach a lot of different approaches to the text, and then churches expect theology graduates to teach just one approach in line with that church's specific doctrine.

Astronaut. It's the ultimate job. I want to see space, to work in space.

Failing that, a test pilot. I think I'd be good at it.

An academic in the field of philosophy. I've read a lot of Dead White Guys, and I think I can do them one better.

I want to pilot a boat. Would love to just be able to hop in and drive my cargo / passangers / wwhatever across the water. Sounds like a nice job. Perfect mix of skill and reward.

Won't happen for a number of reason. One, I can't swim, and learning to swim is a bastard for someone with dyspraxia. Admitedly, I imagine if I'm any good at piolting water craft, I shouldn't need to swim, like how astronauts don't need to be able to breath in space, but it still feels like a drawback.

Also, I haven't the foggiest idea on how I would even start training for that. There is no boat driving school I know of. And if there was, I have the problem of not having any fucking money to pay for it.

Still, it's somthing that's always appealed to me.

Generally you find someone to teach you in private then apply for a boat license. Then you pile up on the hours, get an appropriate multiple-people-carrying boat and apply for boat-with-more-people license. Not much different to cars but way more safety instructions/processes/logons/logoffs to learn.

Y'know, something to think on when it might be a possibility to get the training.

My dad had this dream too and reached it a couple of years ago. He's 55ish

Artisan mattress-tester.

I want to assure people of getting a quality sleep by being paid to give each mattress and old school testing of eight solid woman-hours of quality sleep before they get to it. I think too many mattresses have been tested by robots for mere seconds, and are letting down the consumer.

1) Acting, specifically being a character actor, or on stage, and voice acting too. I'm a big fat kid inside, and I like to play pretend. I only ever took one drama class my entire life, as a first-year elective in uni, and jfc was it a good outlet. I am fucking funny and thrive on people willing to play along.

Only thing is, not only is it prolly way too late to consider lessons or a fine arts drama route, I get nervous as hell around people once we're done and back to normal. I've gotten way better about social anxiety, but I don't think I can handle networking in that field :(

2) I pulled out my childhood diary for this one: an adventurer like Link, Mario, Plok, and Bob (from ReBoot). That's right, kid!me, that's an awesome job!

Adventuring in reality requires money for travel, pluck, and the delusion that you're saving the world. What I would give for all of those things.

Social media person for a Formula 1 team, or actually if we are aiming for the stars I'd like to work in a Formula 1 teams management team.

Because I love Formula 1 and social media and that is what I want to work with. I'd really enjoy traveling the world and have no free time and live in hotels because I am weird like that and it is something that I think I would really enjoy.

The second one is more because I think I could do well in it and I would like to be such an important part of the decision making prosess.

Well, I'm planning on working in the field I want to work in. However, there is a specific job and a specific organization I'd like to work for. I'd love to work for a specific legal services organization because I believe in giving everyone access to the justice system. And I've worked with this one agency and loved it. But there are no jobs.

Movie prop maker. Honestly a bit too late in life and a touch too high risk to just drop and change careers.

Cause I think movie props and costumes are cool. I'll settle with watching making-ofs and daydreaming of could-be's instead.
