Tea makes you tired?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do I sometimes feel more tired after having tea? Anyone else have this problem?

A. What type of tea? What's in it? Cause obviously some ingredients will make you tired.
B. Tea (and a lot of warm beverages) can be relaxing which can equal feeling tired.

I find there's an initial feeling of sleepiness, probably because I associate drinking tea with comfort and winding down. Or maybe it's that my stomach is "full", which usually makes me sleepy.

This is relevant and interesting:

Tea has component which make you feel relaxed and alert rather than jittery and wired like coffe, however it shouldn't make you feed tired. Are you drinking it with sugar?

No idea; I have the opposite problem: even one cup of tea after 6PM will prevent me from sleeping. Caffeine is an evil, evil thing!

Depends on the tea, I guess?

I have an "night" tea with lavender amongst other things, that makes me a lot more relaxed when drinking it (though not really tired, more like ready to go to bed)

A cup of Earl Grey on the other hand does not have that effect on me at all.

I drink herbal tea (no caffeine) in the morning at work. I used to drink more in the evening but I found I went to the bathroom more frequently and had trouble sleeping at night.

I'm not at all sure this is what it is, but for what it's worth: Apparently caffeinated beverages make my bowels want to move, and the pressure from that can make me feel strangely like I am sleepy.

But tea is meant to be soothing.

Tea is a magical beverage which can be soothing or enlivening or both at the same time. A good cup of tea solves most problems.

Depends on the tea and on how you're drinking it.

Black tea usually has more caffeine than green tea. White and oolong tea can vary widely between brands -- some will have almost as much as black tea, some have much less than green. Some herbal teas have no caffeine in them at all (or, technically, tea), and certain varieties like chamomile can aid relaxation. You can also get decaff varieties of black and/or green tea.

If you're making your tea very milky, there are compounds in milk that can make you sleepy. If you're adding sugar it could go either way; some people feel sleepy after a sugary/carby rush - especially if you don't have much in the way of sugars or carbs otherwise - while some people feel wired, particularly in conjunction with the caffeine. The dip after the sugar-caffeine combo can also make some people very sluggish, although it isn't usually as dramatic a crash as you get with coffee because there are components in the tea that mean your body processes the caffeine differently.

Are you usually a tea/coffee drinker? If you're not used to it then the effects can be even more pronounced. If you're drinking it as a pick-me-up expecting the same kind of energizing effect as coffee, that may also be amplifying the tiredness you feel.
