His own brand of 90's feminism. Yes, I think that's a good description of Joss. He tries, but I always get the impression he never quite gets it. Still, I appreciate him trying. I don't think we should discourage people from trying.

I agree with you, but that doesn't seem to be a popular position ATM.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it doesn't. Witch-hunts seem to be more popular these days.

Chiming in with my agreement as well.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed also.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
No, it doesn't, does it? Nowadays when it comes to social justice, it seems you'll get more shit from people for trying but failing to meet their standards, than even the people who're on the other side.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not convinced he's trying very hard, though. Like an earlier comment said, Whedon seems pretty comfortable in his 90s feminism and not particularly inclined to look beyond that era. The more time passes, the more dated his views will seem and the worse it looks that he hasn't been able to make any progress.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
He's reeled in his foot fetish thing though. That is something. That was really noticeable in the first Avengers movie, and got a lot of comment, with Pepper's scenes intro-ing Tony and Black Widow's introduction scenes leaving a number of people feeling more than a little creeped out. That he's reeled that back is good.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, that may be more telling of your response to feet than anything.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't just me, nonny (although feet are pretty gross).

I'm not saying you're wrong but I have absolutely never noticed any feet in either Avengers movie whatsoever. I mean...people have feet but not noticeably??

Tarantino, yes.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Pepper went barefoot in Iron Man 3 as well. Are you saying that Shane Black has a foot fetish too?

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure Pepper is barefoot a lot specifically because she's taller than RDJ more than anything.

I think you may be confusing him with Quentin Tarantino.

They both have foot fetishes. I actually find QT's less annoying because he makes no attempt to disguise it as anything other than a foot fetish. Some people like feet, I guess.

there's foot fetish stuff in The Avengers?? what?

Not really.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
There are a couple of slightly drawn out scenes where the camera is focused on feet. Pepper in the apartment with Tony, she's barefoot and when she walks over to the elevator and the camera is at foot level, which I really noticed when I watched it the first time. And Natasha's opening scene had a couple of shots, but I don't think it was that noticeable. I feel like I'm forgetting something though.

Wait, I thought it was Tarantino who had the foot fetish?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Dialing back your obvious foot fetish only after lots of people have noticed it and pointed it out isn't really a huge accomplishment, though. That's like congratulating someone because they've managed to cut back on public urination.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But if someone is French, then they deserve a cookie for it.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-05-24 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
A foot fetish is equivalent to public urination now?
Edited 2015-05-24 19:06 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that's what generally bothers me about him. Whenever he talks about feminism I get the sense that he still wants to get cookies for being feminist without having to evolve past the "girl who kicks ass but still likes girly things" school of feminism.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-24 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much where his concept of feminism begins and ends, yes.
