Are flower shop AUs a thing? I think I've only seen one, though I'm not entirely sure where. I suspect it was a Bagginshield AU? One character ran a flower shop while the other ran the tattoo parlour next door.

Yes, flower shop/tattoo parlor AUs are very much a thing. I've never understood why - I mean, when was the last time you saw a tattoo parlor and a florist in remotely the same neighborhood?

Well, then, you may be interested to learn that the origin that very trope was a Tumblr post about someone seeing a flower shop next to a tattoo parlor. I used to have a screencap of that post.

I am very interested! Thanks for telling me that - a quick Google even threw out some Yelp reviews for places with them next to each other, so they can't even be that uncommon.

Though, with the frequency it comes up in AUs you'd think that more than half of them are next to each other, even though the fact that it started from a post must mean that somebody thought it was unusual and wanted to comment on it.

Depends on the size of your town, I guess. Mine used to have a tattoo place and a flower shop three doors away from each other. Tattoo place has now moved and is next door to an optometrists office.

I mean, it's possible in huge cities too. Flowershops, tattoo parlors, vintage boutiques, and Japanese restaurants are all very East Village and can be found on the same street, possibly the same block.

Well, you know, people are very strange these days... But honestly, I think considering supermarket flowers, florists of any sort are quite rare, and those there are tend to be quite close to train stations in my experience.

I suppose I'm colored by coming from a huge city where all the tattoo places I ever saw were mostly on a 0.5 mile stretch of main road (13 of them). Because the area has a reputation for being alternative, it's very touristy and the rents are very high, so shops that don't profit hugely off the image are in other, cheaper places. But it seems like that's not the case everywhere.

No, that's a fandom-crossing trend. Every semi-popular fandom has one, if not several. Flowershop AUs and tattoo parlor AUs also exist aplenty independently of each other.

I've never comne across a flowershop AU, but I can't muster any surprise that they exist. Somehow this strikes me as sillier than coffee shop or bakery AUs.

Flower shops show up pretty often in BL though, so it makes me curious whether the fanfic trope stemmed (pun unintended) from that, or whether it sprung up (not doing this on purpose I swear) organically (...) from some other source? It seems as though it shows up in Western based fandoms even more than it does in animanga ones.

??? I consider myself reasonably well-versed in BL and I can't think of a single instance of flower shops in any of the series I've read...

Are you sure you're not thinking of Weiss or something?

I can't remember them all off the cuff, but just recently I remember Mankai Darling and Koi made Hyakurin are centred around florists (and the same characters feature in their prequels/sequels/spinoffs etc). I know there are others I've read recently but I've forgotten the title (I can think of a couple that have the flower shop guy as the sadistic seme type, which kind of turns the 'cute flower shop guy' thing on its head).

And that's without all the oneshots whose titles I've forgotten.

I'm talking about actual yaoi/BL manga though, not mainstream series' like WK.
