Are flower shop AUs a thing? I think I've only seen one, though I'm not entirely sure where. I suspect it was a Bagginshield AU? One character ran a flower shop while the other ran the tattoo parlour next door.

I think flower shop / tattoo parlour is a thing.

I don't know, though. I'm so distant from all this stuff. The modern world is so alienating.

Yes, flower shop/tattoo parlor AUs are very much a thing. I've never understood why - I mean, when was the last time you saw a tattoo parlor and a florist in remotely the same neighborhood?

Well, then, you may be interested to learn that the origin that very trope was a Tumblr post about someone seeing a flower shop next to a tattoo parlor. I used to have a screencap of that post.

I am very interested! Thanks for telling me that - a quick Google even threw out some Yelp reviews for places with them next to each other, so they can't even be that uncommon.

Though, with the frequency it comes up in AUs you'd think that more than half of them are next to each other, even though the fact that it started from a post must mean that somebody thought it was unusual and wanted to comment on it.

huh, having never read one, I thought it meant a combined flower shop/tattoo parlor. Stem and Ink or something.

Depends on the size of your town, I guess. Mine used to have a tattoo place and a flower shop three doors away from each other. Tattoo place has now moved and is next door to an optometrists office.

I mean, it's possible in huge cities too. Flowershops, tattoo parlors, vintage boutiques, and Japanese restaurants are all very East Village and can be found on the same street, possibly the same block.

True. The whole idea of tattoo parlors only being in certain neighborhoods where the kind of people who buy flowers would never dare venture is... kind of strange, these days.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the only tattoo parlours I've ever even seen have been in perfectly reputable neighborhoods.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-25 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you know, people are very strange these days... But honestly, I think considering supermarket flowers, florists of any sort are quite rare, and those there are tend to be quite close to train stations in my experience.

I suppose I'm colored by coming from a huge city where all the tattoo places I ever saw were mostly on a 0.5 mile stretch of main road (13 of them). Because the area has a reputation for being alternative, it's very touristy and the rents are very high, so shops that don't profit hugely off the image are in other, cheaper places. But it seems like that's not the case everywhere.

No, that's a fandom-crossing trend. Every semi-popular fandom has one, if not several. Flowershop AUs and tattoo parlor AUs also exist aplenty independently of each other.

I believe the concept was popularized in The Hobbit fandom, but they're all over the place now.
