YOU CAN'T MAKE ME.

No I don't always do it, it just comes naturally as my first inclination since I RP so much. Sometimes I'll stick with it, but sometimes I'll go back and basically just swap out tenses once I change my mind.

I find I just automatically start in one tense, either present or past, and usually stick with it all the way through. Sometimes to try to change tenses in the middle, and I have go back a decide which I prefer.

Present tense lends a certain sense of immediacy to the tone, I find, so I like it for highly emotional, fast paced fics. (Which is why I started using it for my hate sex fic that's now turning into a sprawling redemption fic/love story thing, so I might go back and do past tense.)

No fuck you I'll set a tone however I want, whether that means I write in past or present tense (and I use both).

I don't mind present tense for shorter fics. I think it brings a certain immediacy to it, as though the reader's just catch a glimpse of the characters' lives.

Present tense in chaptered fic would be a no, though; it's a hard thing to sustain successfully.
