My fanfic pet peeve is the in media res date story

Like, two characters are on a date, and it'll cut away, and it'll come back and one of them will be towards the end of a completely ridiculous story and the other one will be cracking up about it

I don't know why it bothers me some much, except that it just rings false, and the stories are never actually that decent

I really, really can't stand fics that basically only exist for the author to stand on a pedestal and rant about social issues.

I hate when people put in summaries that they've written a genderbender fic but it turns out it was a genderswap/genderflip! Those are not the same thing! A genderbender starts a character in their original gender (usually male) and turns them into the opposite gender as part of the story. A genderflip/swap is when you take your opposite sex OC and insert them into the story in the place of the canon character. You wanna write that, fine, but be honest about it and stop trying to sucker me in with false summaries and tags. Come to that just be honest in your tags and summaries, period!

Stop putting song lyrics in the middle of the fic. It isn't clever and it isn't original. It is just distracting.

Bashing is the obvious one, and bashing that tries to pretend it's not annoys me even more so.

Also making characters do OOC shit for the sake of angst , melodrama or whatever is kind of annoying, especially demonizing nice characters into being horribly abusive. I recall a DP fic that had Danny's parents being wildly OOCly abusive to him , with his mother being a crazy boy hater and the father being a doormat to her (like at birth they ask the doctors if they can make Danny into a girl) and then a teacher who lectures hims about how being gay is horrible because poor 4 year old Danny tries to dress up as his sister who is the only child that they treat well. The author tried to claim they were writing some kind of "psychological deconstruction/study of the family. Except they were nothing like their canon selves whatsoever and all of the issues were pulled from the author's ass.

Hey, author. A snarky narrator is one thing, but you as the author inserting your notes in the middle of a paragraph instead of at the end is a worse fanfic sin than the weeaboos who used random Japanese words in theirs.

There's something very jarring about those hyperbolic descriptions of a character's attractiveness you get in some fics. Hearing Ellen Ripley described as a 'luscious creature', for example, just feels very odd to me.

Making all the other characters (except maybe the love interest) clueless and/or cruel so that the author's favorite woobie can be suitably snarky and tortured. I cringe even when it's so subtle as the favorite always being the voice of reason and always being the most temperate and compassionate of the group, when they're actually a bit of a dick in canon.

It can work with some fic concepts (Mirrorverse type especially) but most of the time I just don't buy it.

Dear author; when you are told that your pet character is coming across as unintelligent (to be kind) and unpleasant, the way to continue the fic and have them still be the hero is make that character *better* not to make every other character worse. If you do the former, your fic and audience will improve. If you do the latter, then your readers will invoke those eight deadly words, and you'll be left raging about why people have stopped sending you feedback.

P.S. Stop sending me email raging at me for not sending you feedback. I told you I was no longer reading, swearing at me will not make me read it again.

Peggy Sue fics that are excellently written, but in the end do not deviate in any meaningful way from canon. I mean, what's the goddamn point then?! >:[

I don't know how to describe this in a few words but, like, if one character is secretly having problems and their friends find out and then the friends are all "why wouldn't you/they tell us? We're your friends. Don't isolate yourself. Hey, you're not alone in this, OK?" Usually accompanied by a gentle lifting of the chin.

It's just too...like the other characters know EXACTLY what to say and the troubled character ends up weepy and infantilized or something. I'm not even really sure what I want instead,though. Maybe an MC whose desire for privacy isnt invalidated by well-meaning people and friends who just don't know what to do but just BE you know?

With smut it sometimes bothers me when one character in fandom is always top or bottom. Like, even if I enjoy the visual, there's something about it that makes me want to opposite (which of course no one will write).

And characters barely resembling themselves, but that one is kind of obvious.

I guess this isn't really a peeve, since I don't actually hate this, it's just sounding increasingly ridiculous to me. I think it's mainly because it gets used too much, but I've also started imagining ACTUAL ROPE spewing everywhere. I can picture some guy trapped in a tower and he's all "I got this" *wankwankwank*.

Language that doesn't fit.

The most recent one was an author who I like in a chapter I actually loved for the most part. But she had a character using "fuck" as a swear word and it just threw me out a bit because in the setting (Middle Earth) it didn't seem appropriate at all. Using the word in the sex context didn't bother me, but it felt off to me for it to be used outside of that context in a world where it didn't seem to fit.

Oh, and also using some sort of equivalent of "god" as a swear to try to make it fit. Please no "gods" or "Eru" or whatever. If they don't use the word that way in that fandom, don't try to make one up that fits.

Fic where Character X has a crush/feelings, and *every single other character* makes fun of them, teases them, and puts them into embarrassing situations deliberately.

Also, when Character X has recently broken up with a long-time partner/had a partner die/had some other relationship disaster and *every single other character* is all 'it's been a month! you need to get back out there! You need to get laid/fall in love/adopt a child/adopt a puppy!!!'

OMG, just...fuck off.

Anachronisms and things that don't fit in the fandom. Earth holidays in fandoms where they don't fit particularly bugs me.

If your fic is based on your headcanon instead of the actual canon, for the love of all that is holy, do not tag it as canon.

Sometimes it's all right to update only once a month and take your time to think through the plot and characterization, instead of churning out poorly constructed bullshit every other day. I hate reading fics that could be so much better, if only...

Warnings or apologies for OOC-ness in the fic summary. If you think your characters might be OOC but don't point it out, I'll read the fic and possibly not notice. But if you're so sure of it that you warn beforehand, why should I bother?
