I hate when people put in summaries that they've written a genderbender fic but it turns out it was a genderswap/genderflip! Those are not the same thing! A genderbender starts a character in their original gender (usually male) and turns them into the opposite gender as part of the story. A genderflip/swap is when you take your opposite sex OC and insert them into the story in the place of the canon character. You wanna write that, fine, but be honest about it and stop trying to sucker me in with false summaries and tags. Come to that just be honest in your tags and summaries, period!

In fairness, I've seen those terms used interchangeably in several fandoms, so it's possible a lot of people do genuinely think they all mean the same thing.

Well then has anyone invented a way I can break someone's fingers via the internet? This is the sort of thing that has happened ever since the big forums, communities, and mailing lists fell apart. Once upon a time anyone making that mistake would be gently corrected so they knew not to confuse terms so that readers searching for a fic were able to quickly sort for relevant results. And making that mistake twice resulted in being torched like a Vietnamese village when the American infantry was in town. I still think most do it on purpose because they want to get their fics to show up in as many searches as possible regardless of relevance because they think that every reader will just like their fic if they only read it. Which is not true at all.

Let me clarify; even the people looking for those fics don't differentiate between them in my experience. And it tends to be fairly obvious either from the summary or the first few lines of a fic which variation it's going to be.

Your Fandoms May Vary, etc. etc. etc. but I can't remember seeing anyone make this distinction as vehemently as you have.

Yeah it can be obvious from the summary, but when you are sifting through a huge pile of results it gets tedious going through page after page page of genderbender/genderswap used interchangably (and, no, people searching are not using it interchangeably. Genderbender kink forums are forever bitching about the interchangeability by authors) to find the three or four relevant ones. The signal/noise ration is horrendous. I spend more time discarding false positives than I do actually reading these days.

Then perhaps you need to realize that there might not be as much overlap between gender kink forums and fanfic writers. It sounds as though you're applying the expectations and conventions of the former onto the latter, which is likely to lead to disappointment.

I'd argue that most fanfic writers writing these kinds of stories aren't coming at it from the gender kink angle like you are, and as such the terminology and distinctions you make aren't necessarily going to be anything they're aware of.

Friend, I'm afraid in non-porn terms those mean the same thing. I mean, I sympathize with someone teasing your kinkboner, but not everyone is into the same thing as you are and realizes that that refers to a genre of gender transformation porn.
