Perscirption Eyeglasses

(Anonymous) 2015-05-26 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I just got a new pair of glasses from Zenni's, and they are already getting very smudged and I can hardly see out of them. I've tried looking online and there's such a disagreement on how you should clean them. Some people say water and dish soap, but other's say that strips the coating.

I've been using microfiber cleansing cloths and an a microfiber cloth, and it seems to make it worse? I'm wondering if I shouldn't get spray cleaner. But it seems they are pushing the cleansing clothes so much, I don't see it anymore.

It could just be the glasses. I only got they automatic scratch coating, and standard anti-reflective coating. But these have been the worst pair I've ever gotten.

Do you wear glasses? Do you buy your glasses in store or online? How do you clean your glasses? Any tips or help?

I have the same issue with my glasses and it's a pain in the ass. Checking around, it seems that there might be something in the anti-reflective coating that makes lenses more prone to picking up smudges (although I don't know whether there are different types of that coating that might be worse than others).

I've had this pair over a year and I keep it under control with occasional washes with warm water and a little dish soap, and the microfibre cloth in between. I haven't seen any noticeable effect on the coating or the lenses, but again, I have no idea if there are variations in the coating ingredients whereby some might react to the soap more than others.

Make sure the cloth itself is also as clean as it can be, though. I've found that otherwise you're just pushing the smudge around the lens instead of cleaning it off. Stick to using one side of the cloth for the lenses and one side for contact with your fingers so that the cloth doesn't pick up oils or lint etc. And give the cloth itself a wash/replace it every so often.

My pairs from Zenni tend to get more smudged just because they haven't been fitted to my face just right. Some people swear that their glasses smudge worse when they get coatings on them, no matter where they buy them.

I use little cleaning wipes once in awhile to cut through the ick, and replace my microfiber cloth frequently. Soap and water works too, but drying them off without getting them dirty again can be tricky. Ultimately, Zenni is so cheap and I have to update my prescription so often that I don't worry about damaging the glasses while cleaning them.

With microfiber cloths that come with the glasses and eyeglass cleaner.

Sadly, you need eyeglass cleaner because of the amount of protein that is going to wind up on the lenses and because you don't want to risk damaging the coatings. You can't just use dish soap. This is one of those situations where you need to buy the marketed product.

I have a pump-spray bottle of glasses cleaner I bought at a drug store. It wasn't expensive and it's lasted a long time (although the fact that I've worn contacts more than glasses the last couple of years helped). In combination with a microfiber cloth, it works very well.

Personally, I find an anti-reflective coating on eyeglasses to be pretty useless. It makes them a lot harder to keep clean and provides no real benefit that I can see. I always go for the hardest lenses available, which helps prevent scratches without extra coatings. (Now, if only I coud get safety glasses and non-perscription sunglasses made out of that same stuff...)

Don't bother with spray cleaner. Just rinse your glasses with warm water (and a gentle hand soap if necessary) and dry if off gently with a paper towel. Then use a clean microfiber cloth. It's works wonders for me.

Always used a microfiber cloth. I can't use the spray stuff because the smell of it is so close to the eyes and it can give me a migraine. Which I have to tell the technicians every time I go to Ossip because they peddle that stuff like hell.

Back when I wore glasses I cleaned them with glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth. I bought them in stores, but I stopped doing that (and stopped wearing glasses altogether eventually) because the prices got outrageously expensive. I hear they're much cheaper online, and have friends with good online experiences, though.

HOWEVER, JUST SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE AND GET YOUR EYES LAZERED. DO IT. BEST DECISION EVER FUCK GLASSES AND CONTACTS 4 LYFE.

Hey, I've been using Zenni for everything for years - use antireflective on most of my pairs most of my pairs but I haven't noticed them smudging any more than those I didn't get the coating on...
But when they do get smudged I just rinse them with liquid soap under warm running water and then dry them with whatever lint-free soft cloth happens to be floating around. Sometimes a smudge is a bit stubborn. Then it's just another rinse, another buff, and there you go.
